Nikon DSLR's last for about a year. You are not doing anything wrong. The cameras are not made to last much longer. They are basically an $800 disposable camera, otherwise Nikon would be doing the honorable thing which is to replace the bad cameras. I am stuck with a D40X that cannot take a picture in Auto mode, the same thing happens. Once in a while the flash fires but so bright the entire image is white.

It sounds like your flash capacitor isn't fully charged up and your taking a photo and there isn't enough power charged up, so your photos turn out too dark. Take a photo, wait for a minute or til you see the flash icon inside the viewfinder lit up and then try taking another photo.

Slow down your shooting. The "R11" indicates that you can take 11 more images before the buffer is full and the camera will stop functioning until the images are moved to the memory card.
Select a smaller file size. Nikon cameras allow you to select from several sizes of JPEG as well as a RAW and a RAW + JPEG file. These files vary in size. If you select a smaller file size, the buffer will take longer to fill, allowing you to shoot longerTurn off long exposure noise reduction. This function causes the camera to expose twice for every image, and this can fill up the buffer quickly as those images are processed and written to the card.

    Try turning camera on,
Then press both Green buttons for a count of 10. This should restore factory reset.

Some models also have a reset button under a connector flap, or go into your menu. Under Custom Setting Menu, choose Menu Reset.

One of these methods should work.

Nikon D40X Flash is Blinding Me!

If the camera is very new, take it back to where you bought it for a refund or exchange.  If its still under warranty, send it to nikon directly or via a camera shop.  It sounds like a failure of the flash to TTL and to fire.  You can reset the camera and try using it in program mode with the flash set to fire everytime and not at all shooting some photos in each flash setting to see what happens.
With many lenses and lens hoods and shooting situations, the pop-up flash is of limited use.  If the camera is out of warranty or you don't wanna wait for repair, buy an external flash unit and if it works, just pair it up with that flash for your shooting.  That is one of the great thing about an SLR camera is that you can add things such as an external flash to enhance the cameras abilities.

In my experience, Nikon service takes an extremely long time to fix things - whether they are understaffed or what I am not sure, but it can be frustrating waiting for something like a camera to come back, which is why I recommend first trying to return or exchange if within 30 days of purchase.  I haven't had a chance to look for any recalls or any other issues, but often look through the service and support area of the nikonusa.com site.  If you get a chance, check it out, and you can send a question to them telling them about your camera and its problems....  they are truly the ones to ask and should be able to tell you how to proceed.

    D40X flash problems

As the manual warns, never operate the camera (or any device, in general) if you notice something like that. Remove the battery, and send your camera for service

One can only guess what was the source of the problem. Did you drop the camera, expose it to high temperatures (e.g. left it inside a car in 40 degrees Celsius) or expose it to torrential rain?

In any case, how long it will take to repair it (or, more likely, replace it) depends on your local Nikon service department.

    Nikon D40X inbuilt flash

If it's withing 30 days, get it exchanged. I have a D70s and it's been working fine for me, maybe something with the D40x with other customers? Take it back to the store and let an "instructor" try it out to make sure it's not a setting.

It's great for the manufacturer to know about any problems so they can get a good sample of problems to help many people. Good luck.
