Question about Panasonic Televison & Video

6 Answers

I have a 3 1/2 year old Panasonic TH-42PX50U TV that has recently been spontaneously clicking off usually both the video and audio. The red LED above the on/off switch will begin flickering at the same time. The remote & TV on/off switch at the same time will not operate. Eventually in 10-20 minutes the light stops flickering and both the switch and remote again function--and the TV works normally. These events definitely occur more frequently the longer we try and use the TV. If the set is unplugged for a few seconds, however, it is operational sooner. The same problem occurs if the TV is plugged directly into the wall or into a surge ;protector. Is there an economical fix for this problem--is it over-heating an electrical component-do I need a new TV? Lou

    Is this a known problem with this TV and would is it usually worthwhile pursuing a full service call? I know enough without your consultation that a tech can perform an in house circuit check, but wanted to know if this is a known fixable problem that would make economical sense..

    The sol'n was adequate, but still did not answer the question if this is a frequent problem particularly with this TV or plasmaTV's in general.

Sir,

The problem could occur if attached to a surge protector. Also open the tv and check the power supply board it may lose solder joints or connections. Check external output souces it correctly plug in or not?

thanks
good luck

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, I doubt if there are any major components defective. From all indications based on your description, possibilities are:

  • heat related issue;
  • cold solder joints;
  • leaky capacitor particularly in the power supply board, especially the +5VDC rail and the mains B+.
The repair would be low cost if you are considering a DIY (do-it-yourself) repair. However, to be able to do this, you must have some familiarity with electronic components/circuitry and safety procedures, use of a DVM and a soldering iron would be required. It would be to your added advantage access to a service manual or at the very least a schematic diagram with voltage readings.Should you be uncomfortable performing a DIY, perhaps your best bet would then be to seek the services of a qualified professional. If the cost of repairs and downtime would be factored in, then you may have to re-evaluate your options and consider a replacement.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy New Year.

This sounds very much like your flyback on the main board needs replaced (this controls power flow and is overheating causing your tv to shut off and on! this part should only cost around $70.00

    Thanks.

    no its not a general problem, Occurs because of many regions…
    1) high electricity
    2) due to some shorting on the main board
    3) or due to humidity climate(it effects the circuitry of any electrical devices).

  • Reset component settings. Usually, the problems you encounter with a projection TV may be resolved through the resetting to its factory settings. If you experience inaccuracies in the color, reset the television's PerfectTint/PerfectColor capabilities. Simply press the Menu tab and then highlight "Perfect Color" using your right key arrow. After this, press "Enter" and then "Reset" in order to reset to factory settings. If you have audio / video problems (VCR or DVD player), simply press "Menu" and highlight the "Reset" option.
Reset television controls. In case you cannot fix your TV via its component settings, there are other ways of resetting. Just select "Menu", key in "1, 2, 3", and then press "Enter." In doing this, the TV's manufacturer's specifications will all be restored. If your TV's power system does not function, you should perform a complete system reset. You can do this by clicking on Reset System button located at the TV's control panel. Your television will be turned off and then a green light (LED) will quickly flash for approximately one minute. Once the light has stopped flashing, your TV should immediately turn on.

3 blinks is the error code for the convergence ICs. You need to replace both STK392-110 convergence ICs. You can get replacement ICs at the following link and they provide installation instructions with pictures.

Plasma tv screen goes black once you turn it on. Only sound

I have a panasonic TH-42PX60U plasma TV. When I watch TV programing I have no problems, or with the DVD input. But if I switch to another input, be it video game (PS2) or vcr the screen sometimes goes black and the red power lcd light next to the power switch flashes. Holding the power button in for a few seconds will shut down the tv. Then I can turn it back on and it may operate normally again for a undetermined period of time, before the screen goes black again. This never happened when new. The tv is about 1 year old. Any ideas on this problem? Thanks Ernie

3 blinks means the convergence circuits are shutting the set down. Usually the convergence ICs will take care of the problem, but I would recommend getting the service manual from the following link, as they will provide you free support to help you diagnose why it wont start as usually the convergence ICs wont prevent a set from powering up, unless another component in the convergence circuit has failed.

Have you gotten any solutions to this problem? We had the same thing happen to our TV recently. Haha, maybe they all died on the same day. Before this, we had a convergence problem with the blue color. If you had it fixed, how much did it cost? Our warranty just expired too! Thanks
