Is the game that you are trying to play on a burnt or home made disk? If so, that may be your problem. If it is a regular store bought disk and it can't recognize the game then its a different situation and I would suggest purchasing a disk cleaner instead. There is probably dirt on sensor that needs to be cleaned.
dvd player will only play movies for the COUNTRY in which you purchased it. There is no way to purchase a system or configure a system to play ALL MEDIA FOR ALL COUNTRIES. The country codes are specific and each country wants to prevent any other country from playing their dvds music, etc
you have to change your laser lens, thats probably what's wrong since your ps3 does not recognize the game when you insert it, you can chage it your self by buying a new laser lens for your ps3 if you do make sure to specify your playstation3 system i.e: Playstation 3 80gb or Playstation 3 SLIM 250 gb
it is possible, if your ps3 is more than 3 months old, that dust has accumulated in the drive. get a laser lens cleaner from a local record store.
if you bought your ps3 in a different country, you need games from that country/region.
Its a problem for the PS3 known as the SoD. It means you cant read any discs now. You can play demos and stuff stored on ur PS3 thpugh. If its under warranty, sony WILL fix it for ya. If not, be ready to shell out 125$
If you buy a gaming console from one country and you
buy a game from a different country, the game will not work because the
file format is different to what the console supports. i.e You buy a
Playstation 3 in America and you buy Hitman in the UK, they will not
work with each other. If the game is copied or damaged it will also say
"File Format Not Supported" or "Incorrect Region Code".
way to fix this problem is if you buy games from the country that the
console was bought from or you can also purchase a code that will
unlock certain regions so your console should play most games.

The pal ps2 games and dvds will not play on a Japanese ps3 due to region coding. You can play all ps3 games and blu ray films because they do not use region coding. Some games will also play differently on a ps3, for example, Uncharted: Drakes Fortune (I highly recommend the game) will not have any blood on a Japanese ps3. The region coding feature can not be changed/modified. I would recommend returning Japanese ps3 and purchasing a European model instead if that is possible. Bon chance.
Some games won't be supported since they are region specific. And if it's a PS2 game then it may not have the patch needed to play it. Here in the states about 200 PS1 and PS2 games are not recognized by the PS3. And if it's not an American region game, then we have to have a mod chip for it to work.
