Question about Canon ZR900 Mini DV Camcorder

Firewire and playback on TV

Hi,
I have recently purchased a ZR900 Canon MiniDV camcorder. Recording is fine in both SP and LP.

The problems that I have are:

- My Windows XP laptop won't recognize my camcorder when i connect thru a firewire cable (4-pin both ends). I use Ulead MovieFactory for capturing.

- When I connect the camcorder thru the AV cable (3.5mm 4-pole male plug to 3 x Rca) I see garbled video but audio is OK.

Thanks for your help.

John

I can connect to the TV and to the PC but the image quality looks like the second generation of an old vhs tape. Sound works fine in both cases. I have contacted Canon support and will report back if they give me anything useful.

I don't know it this will solve your problem but I'm using a 3 pole male plug and getting picture on the TV (but not great picture - see above).

1. Connect the camcorder to a TV and check if you can playsee the tape.
2. Take that tape and check it using another miniDV camcorder.

this way you will know if the issue is within the camcorder or the tape.
If is within the camcorder .. take it to a service dealer and see how much is to fix it. Chances are that is not worth to be fix. A brand new ZR900 is just 200 USD ...

Mode for playback of older 8mm tapes using Sony DCR-TRV730 ?

In 1990s Sony camcorder records movie in analog format so playing in digital camcorder like DCR-TRV730 doesn't mean it will be converted in digital format and you can not import file in PC for editing purpose. You will get analog signal while playing back old cassettes.

Regarding SP, LP speed, its decided at time of recording. Camera sens SP or LP automatically in playback and set itself accordingly.

If you want to convert old cassettes into digital format, connect our camcorder to DVD recorder and burn DVD which is digital format, copy DVD files in to PC and do desired editing.

Wont record anything to MiniDV tape and A/D randomly working

Hello,

Sorry about delayed reply as I just saw it.

Its known problem of ccd imager in Canon ZR85 camcorder and ccd imager needs to be replaced.

Canon will repair your camcorder free of cost as per announced scheme for ccd imager issue.

Click Canon CCD Advisory for details, how to get free repair.

Regarding can't see picture or time code in playback, it is problem of dirty / clogged video heads. Use good quality video head cleaning cassette to clean heads and hope camera will show playback picture.

Good luck.

Setting the tape speed

Power up camera on Camera mode, go to menu, select camera settings, go to Record Mode and select SP or LP there. Now your camera is ready to record as per selection.
You can not change speed SP/LP during playback mode because its properties of signal set during recording.
