Washing machine transmission replacement

The transmission for a late 90's model is under warranty, but I would like to avoid the $150.00 service fee by replacing it myself. How challenging would this be, and could you send me instructions?

If you have never done this job before it is worth spending the 150 service fee. I'm a commercial maytag service tech and these can take me up to 2 hours if I run into problems. I can see if I can come up with a list of parts and tools you will need to do the job so you can judge for yourself if you think it will be to much of a hassle to do yourself

Washer does not spin and it makes a grinding sound

Hello keri... when it will not spin and it makes a grinding sound the transmission has gone bad. This is a costly part and a costly labor fee. Unless the machine is still under warranty a replacement is recommended over a repair. Joe

Thanks for choosing Fixya!

GE Model wwsr3090t5ww. Agitator and drum turn together. What is broken?

The transmission is bad and must be replaced.
Contact a GE service company as most of these transmissions are under 10 year warranty.

I have a Cabrio Whirlpool washer. I'm getting the F51 error code and can tell that there is some clothing trapped between the two barrels the washer. Is it possible to get the item of clothing out myself...

So Your Cabrio's Got the F51 (AKA Cabrio Flu) -- The FAQ You've probably found this page because you've been trying to find out why your washer repeatedly quits mid-cycle and starts displaying an F-51 message. Well, I've created this blog in the hopes of sorting out the facts and getting the word out on this apparent major defective part with a $700+ consumer product.

Basically, the F51 error is a rotor position sensor error. And from everything I've gleaned from my research it is becoming a growing problem as more and more owners reach the 1st anniversary of becoming a Cabrio owner.

What has to be fixed?
Well per the service technician I spoke with and my aformentioned research, two parts really need to be replaced. 1) the rotor sensor itself ($43) and 2) the control board ($197). Apparently, Whirlpool has yet to officially recall these parts, but there is a new board that has a reduced or no sensitivity to the rotor sensor and thus the problem should be corrected.

Can I fix it myself?
That depends on your level of handy-skills. If you're one who can work on late model foreign cars with ease, then this probably won't be a challenge. But for most amateur handy-"people" this will require a professional.

Will Whirlpool pay for the repair?
If you're under warranty (either 1 year or extended), then, of course. If you're not, then maybe. Some people have reported online that Whirlpool has allowed a "policy adjustment" for this repair. In some cases this has meant a total repair free of charge. In other cases, this has meant parts or labor free, but not all free. Regardless, you'll have to call Whirlpool and try to get farther with honey. If that doesn't work, then make sure Whirlpool knows how much you know and that you really want to be able to recommend Whirlpool in the future, but this doesn't help. You will do the opposite (i.e. tell everyone to avoid Whirlpool) if this isn't resolved.

Why doesn't Whirlpool recall the part and fix everyone's Cabrio?
This is the ultimate $64k question. First, it would cost Whirlpool nearly $400 per unit to repair, this could amount to well over a million dollars in just repairs, not to mention the embarassment of a recall. The second theory is that this isn't the only problem with this washer. Recent reports of rusting and other error codes may be preventing Whirlpool from wanting to set a precdent. Finally, this is a trend with Whirlpool as can be seen with the model previous to the Cabrio, the Calypso. It began experiencing problems shortly after its release, for which Whirlpool had little to no response. The situation eventually landed in court with a class action suit and multi-million dollar settlement (see http://calypsosettlement.com/).

What should we do about it?
First, continuously encourage Whirlpool to do what's right and recall a defective part for one of their flagship products. Second, as long as Whirlpool continues to do this, make certain that every Cabrio owner knows of the problem before paying for repairs. Third, make sure every consumer considering an appliance purchase knows that Whirlpool should be avoided as long as this issue remains unresolved.

H3 Elite washer.... steel tub is wobbling and cutting into the plastic ring liner. If steel tub or has separated from bearing, is this covered under warranty.... after 4 years.... or not. How expensive is...

rear pulley nut is loose. tighten . if it has been loose for a while pulley may be warped and also tub bearing and spin basket could be bad. dont have your specific model # to know if in warranty . can go to wpl .com and check warranty with your model # or kenmore then go to sears.com . i would use another servicer we waive are service fee if you fix the washer we only charge 65.00 service call. im sure you can find a servicer with a lower service call. thats the highest ive ever heard they will charge you double what anyone else charges.worse case scenerio could be 300-400 dollars if tub, pulley , spin basket need to be replaced. but i say its worth you replacing pulley or checking nut any other repairs for this i would just replace unit. again check your warranty i think the spin basket has a 10-20 yr warranty.

Clicking noise during wash and rinse cycle

The transmission has gone bad. I hope this machine is still under warranty. I own my own applaince service company where we do warranty work for GE. This problem is well know by GE. When we receive a warranty service call for one of the GE top loaders and we diagnose the unit with this problem. GE will only pay us the trip charge and diagnosis fee. They replace the machine rather than repair them. The GE dealer that delivers the new unit is not allowed to leave the used unit but to take it with them and later destroy it so that no parts are useable. GE has had a real bad problem with their transmissions in their top loaders for about 10 years or so. You will find that it is cheaper to buy a new machine rather than replace the transmission even if you were to do it yourself. If the unit is not been out of warranty for very long, I suggest you call GE, give them your model# and serial #. tell them it has a bad transmission. Let them know that you understand that they are totally aware of the problem with their transmissions in top loaders. That you expect them to either grant you large a discount on a new machine or to cover a high % of the cost of repairs to the one you have. I understand that they have done both for customer in an attempt to avoid class action judgments. It' s worth a try. Sorry for the bad news but I see this all the time.
P.S. GE is still building bad equipment. They are surviving on their name because thay have totally destroyed their reputation throughout the industry.
Please rate solution.

Leaking fluid

Hello cousinohlcj,
Welcome to Fixya,

You said, why is my washer leaking a dark fluid?
How old is your washer?
This usually means your Hydraulic fluid is leaking from the washers transmission
When fluid is leaking out of a faulty transmission a it is only a matter of time till it stops working!
Most of the time if the washer is not under warranty it is not worth replacing the transmission which runs about 350 - 400 dollars. That is why I ask the year of the washer!

Here is an interesting report I just read!!!!!!!!!!

Repair or replace?

When to pull the plug on your old washer

Typically, you'll also find a troubleshooting section for more-serious problems
in the owner's manual.

Should you pay for a repair or buy a new model?
The answer depends mostly on the age of your washer,
how much you bought it for,and the cost of the repair.

Follow these guidelines:

When a repair makes sense.

If your washer is under warranty or less than four years old ,
paying for a repair makes sense.
Note that washers under warranty might require service from a factory-authorized technician;
readers have found them on a par with independent repairers.

When a repair might be a wise choice.

If your washer is out of warranty and is four to seven years old,
it might make sense to pay for a repair. Customers generally pay $100 to $200 for a repair.
But you might want to buy a new model even at this stage,
given that today's models have added features.
Higher energy efficiency is another plus: Energy Star-qualified models made after April 28, 2008,
are 43 percent more efficient than conventional models built before 2001 and 56 percent
more efficient than those built before 1993.

When it pays to replace.

The repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new washer.
Data also shows that it doesn't pay to fix a less-expensive washer
eight or more years old.

Thanks to better recycling programs, less than 10 percent
of washers you replace are likely to end up in a landfill.
Thanks for giving me the opportunity to advise you!
