Maxtor 3100 configured (USB) with Windows Vista will not work.

Hello.

There are various levels of USB (1.0, 1.1 2.0). It appears that USB 2.0 doesn't recognize the external hard drive but the older USB hub does. I suspect that you have the newer 2.0.

To determine if your computer has a USB 2.0 port (You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps):

Open Device Manager by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Device Manager.‌ If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Double-click Universal Serial Bus controllers.

If the word Enhanced is included in any of the listed controllers, your computer has USB 2.0 controller drivers installed.

Try the Maxtor drive with another computer that has the USB 1.0 or 1.1 ports. If it still doesn't work, the USB interface in the enclosure is defective and you need to return/exchange it.

Hope this helps.

My windows 7 does not recognize my maxtor hard drive. any ideas. thanks len

I have a Maxtor One Touch III Mini, 60 GB hard drive and I had the same problem with Windows 7. It recognized my drive to do a Windows Easy Transfer from my old computer to my new one, but it didn't recognize the software. I was not able to open files on the drive or download to it for a back up. I just did a "chat" with Maxtor/Seagate tech support, and they told me I could download Seagate Manager software for the Free Agent series, and that would work. They advised me to go to www.support.seagate.com/support/certificate.html
They gave me a certificate validation code, which was only valid for a short time, and that brought me to the Seagate Manager Installer. I downloaded it a few minutes ago, and it works fine and is compatible with Windows 7. My drive works again.

I suggest anyone having a problem contact Maxtor/Seagate via chat or e-mail (there is a charge for telephone tech support) and tell them your issue. They were able to help me. By the way, their forums and tech support Q&A's did not help me. I had to contact someone to get what I needed.

There is not much u can do if it wont let u access the drive first try a different computer so we can make sure its the drive and not the usb port on the PC and please make sure that you have confirmed power going to the drive if the drive does not work on another PC then the drive may be faulty if it does then we need to reconfigure your device manager and make sure that you USB drivers are working properly. you will need to install the drivers for your drive.
xp doesn;t recognize 2.0 usb unless you install drivers and have a usb 2.0 port
but install the drivers and you should get it to recognize

you can go to control panel, system and device manager.
look for a usb device that is not working and right click install drivers or update drivers.
See if it comes up.
Once it does you will see it in the device manager under disk drives

Most of the time when you get error messages like this it is due too drivers. Now in order to determine this issue I need to know what type of computer you have, OS installed on it, how old the PC etc. Please advise!
