Wanting cool voices, waypoint and poi icons 4 my StreetPilot 2720

I would love to get unique waypoint and poi icons along with different voices than what came with my Garmin 2720 StreetPilot. I am getting a little tired of the stock software voices and symbols. Any help would be appreciated.
thanks

I have exhausted the garmin website. They would not allow me to update to the current maps which in and of itself did not endear me to them. They recently discontinued my Street Pilot 2720. Unfortunately just after I payed entirely too much for it. So not being able to get the update to 2009 was a bit of a burn. I will continue to look for interesting Icons and such.

    Thanks for your help.

For voices for your unit:

Icons can be obtained from various internet GPS sites. Try googling GPS icons.

This unit was introduced in spring of 2005 so you can't blame Garmin for discontinuing it almost four years later. Consumers want more features crammed into smaller units. I think you should phone Garmin tech support. I think if you purchase a map update disk, you should be able to update the unit's maps. The Garmin site does offer updates for the unit's internal software.

I was successful in accomodating your original request: to add new voices to your unit.

Trying to update but my computer does not recognize the device or port

Same issue on Mac OSX 10.4.1 with my SP 2720. Just purchased and is in excellent condition, never registered. Double checked all connections, downloaded and re-downloaded updater. Updater continues to say cannot find device. Tried other USB cables, ports, turned on/off, etc... Nothing. Would LOVE to know what resolutions others have found. Please let us know!

Tip

Garmin POI, GPI, GPX, GDB and CSV and how not to be confused

GPX or CSV file can be converted to the proprietary Garmin format GPI format (Garmin Points of Interest) format using the Garmin POI loader v2.54 OR use the one bundled with the Garmin Map Source v6.15.11 at the time of posting if there is also a BMP file of the same filename then this will be added to the Waypoints Symbol.
If you put all your POI that you want to be added to the Garmin POI then place all them in the same folder prior to starting the POI Loader and they will be placed into sub-menus otherwise it will select the single file entries only.

eeb2fc6.jpg

However the Garmin Mapsource can't open this GPI format it is specifically for the SATNAV Device only open GDB, MPS, GPX and LOC files can be opened as standard. There are two ways that I know of that will convert this GPI back into CSV or the POI format if required you might like to open the POI content in the Map Source program.

First this can be done using GPI2GPS it does however cost 15 EUROs or its older brother GPSConvertor for an extra 20 EUROs will convert to all formats for all makes of device including Tom-Tom, Garmin and many others.

Secondly you can convert POI file in CSV format directly to GPX (exchange format) using the excellent GPXtoPOI Convertor v1.1.8 then import directly into the Map Source if you also want to use BMP that has been downloaded in Map Source you can replace the 8 default custom waypoint symbols located on your computer with your own or from the Tescos.ZIP file in this example that contains the CSV and BMP.

You can open these symbols with a graphic editor and use them as templates for creating your own symbols. You can add up to 64 custom waypoint symbols. These symbols must be in .bmp format and must be named numerically from "000.bmp" to "063.bmp." Custom waypoint symbols can be 16 x 16 pixels (small) or 24 x 24 pixels (large) and up to 32-bit color

Also check out my other POI tip HERE for help on how to create your own BMP's for use with your Garmin using Adobe Photoshop

It will also convert any GPX format into CSV format for use with the POI loader using the other button on the menu maybe this program would be best called GPXtoCSV instead to avoid confusion

.
And this one I saved for last If you want to transfer images from the Garmin use xImage and have your Garmi SATNAV connected.

For a full list of all POI sources then visit the Gamin POI Source another great website full of loads of useful tools is www.freegeographytools.com

If you are unable to use xImage it means that you unit is not compatible for example the Nuvi 250 will not be found and you may see this window

I want to go Geocaching and I want to know how to enter Lat/Long or update my equipment to this?

well i'm a great geocacher and i love to help people with the GPS'rs
so you found the guy :))))
It may not be the easiest approach, but you could create a custom POI file for your Geocache locations and then load them into your c330 using POI Loader.

If you're a premium member on Geocaching.com, it's my understanding that you can download locations in GPX format. POI Loader is supposed to read GPX files, but I haven't tried it with geocache locations yet.

Do you have a geocaching account that can download GPX files?

Someone told me that you can use Long/Lat with Google Earth, and you can save Google Earth POI's in GARMIN .cvs format, to use in the PIO Loader.

How does one update th gps?

You connect the 2720 to your pc with the supplied usb cable.
Power up the 2720 with the ac supply cable.
Then run the garmin webupdater. It will do the update.

You must have previously installed the webupdater and the usb drivers. If you use the garmin mapsource software and can connect to the 2720, to transfer waypoints, tracks, etc., then the usb drivers are already installed.

You can download the webupdater at this site:
http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp

Hope this helps.

Hard reset

I was told that you turn off the unit, hold down the FIND key and turn it on while holding. Keep pressed for about 10sec. then release.

System missing

Well, for the 2730 which is basically the same, you turn off the unit, hold down the FIND key and turn it on. Hold for about 5 seconds and release. It should reset the unit.

Unlock Code

When updating the maps, you need to be registered with Garmin. All the numbers came with the unit. If you turn over your Garmin 2720, there will be a number flanked by "*". That is your unit ID. When you register, you must provide that ID. From the site, you can update your maps and you shouldn't need the 25digit key. It's programmed into your unit.

Do you use the plug in adapter with the speaker in the plug?
Check it, there is a small volume wheel on it, probably sent it to zero whilst unplugging or plugging it....also check if the power plug is fully seated in the GPS

Problem with uploading Map Update 2008

"Isn't it supposed to look like the image on the package? "

NO, the image on the package is just for show. The newer Garmin C5XX, Nuvi, will allow you to change to a car icon. To get 3D go to the main menu and select the wrench, then select map, then Map view to change to 3D.

Mapsource 2008 only upgrade the streets and POI (point of interest).
