The computer shuts off when the screen is adjusted forward.

The LCD Display Cable Is Most Likely Pinched Or Already Past the Pinching Point and Has Broken Solid Connection, causing the Short and shutdown when screen is moved or flexed...
The Hinge Area (Left Side)... Needs To Be Examined... And If No Short/Pinched/Frayed Cable In That Area, You Need To CHeck The Display Cable Where It Connects To The Back Of THe Screen... Reseat THe Ribbon Cable...

Fan went out. how to repair myself

First you need to find out if you can purchase the fan,

http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com/Sony,Vaio-VGN-FJ-FZ-Series,Laptop,Fans.aspx

Now you need the Vaio VGN-FJ Series Service Manual,

http://tim.id.au/laptops/sony/vgn-fj.pdf

(PDF file download. Advise letting it download all the way, before looking through it)

Now post back if you need me to guide you. Looking at the procedures you need to follow can be daunting, if you've never done this before.

Hi my sony vaio vgn-sr13gn, shift key does not work at all. not even in Command promt. Both shift keys don't work. What can I do?

A friend of mine has the same problem and i stumbled on your question today. This problem occurred with the Vaio VGN-FZ11E, after very very modest usage, no scratches or damage visible whatsoever.

There's one option out there:

"I found that if you hold down both left and right shift key at the same time (did this for several seconds), it somehow solved the problem. Hopefully that fixed the issue. Also, go to control panel, click on accessibility options..in the keyboard tab, click on the settings buttons for sticky keys, filter keys and toggle keys and deselect the option to use shortcut..hopefully this will help you and other people that have had this problem."
Quoted from here

If that doesn't work, seems to me the remark of Benwabnick seems to be the solution, as posted below.

the contact underneath the shift key itself is starting to go bad. Its a common issue with sony laptops, the keys can wear out pretty quickly. You'll have to get another keyboard.

My laptop doesnt detect USB Pen drives (sony vaio VGN-FJ 270)

Go to start->control panel->system->hardware->device manager. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers. Right click on every USB root hub and select uninstall option. They will be reinstalled on next restart.
After that plug USB pen drive to usb port - go to start->control panel->system->hardware->device manager. Click Universal Serial Bus controllers then click on Action tab (the one at the top of Device manager window and select scan for hardware changes.
If that will not solve the issue try different USB port.
Make sure you have latest service pack installed so Windows would install proper drivers for the device.
Let me know if this is not solved

Delete key, dash key and six key does not work on Sony Vaio laptop

Usually this is due to a hardware problem with the keyboard. 98% of the time by replacing the keyboard you'll fix the problem.

You could also try reinserting the data cable from the keyboard to the motherboard.

It can sometimes get a tiny tiny bit loose and cause problems like this.

Be VERY careful when you remove the plastic tab that holds the keyboard data cable in place. They are EXTREMELY easy to damage.

I know I've messed up plenty myself

:-P

Best of luck!

I have a problem with keyboard volume control

These instructions are for Windows XP:

  • The volume button, brightness key, and disc eject button on some computers will not work if the HotKey Utility application is not running.
  • The Magnify button and the Fn keys will not function properly before the operating system has finished starting.
  • The setting may not be saved if the ESC key is used to close the Fn display. Press the ENTER key or allow the Fn display to close automatically to save the setting.
  1. Click the Start button, then click Run .
  2. In the Run window, next to Open , type MSCONFIG .
  3. Press the ENTER key.
  4. In the System Configuration Utility window, click the Startup tab.
  5. On the Startup tab, under Startup Item , ensure that there is a check in the HKserv checkbox. NOTE: If HKserv is missing, reinstall the HotKey Utility application and the Sony Utilities Library.
  6. Click the OK button.
  7. In the System Configuration box, click the restart button.
