Phillips 46"rear projection with moving (Red & Blue )bowed image

I have a 46-inch Philips Rear projection TV. Recently, its image has become distorted. Red and Blue have a moving bowed image.
Any suggestions of what needs replacing? I'm willing to give it a shot, but need some advice. Thank you in advance. Teddy,

Hi, I tried the factory reset, the projected image is still bowed in with moving red lines, it did seem to group the lines together a bit more making the image a bit better,it has the 3D effect.you can't use the converge settings since the crosss move too much. The resolution I beleive all seems ok. Their is nothing new near the tv that should cause an electro magnetic effect.

Hello corayman

The first thing you should try replacing which is most likely your problem in this situation are the ICs. There will be two of them on the convergence board they will be marked as STK-xxx (where xxx is a number). They are usually the culprit when these two colors go out of alignment and is the cheapest solution so hope that by replacing these you will fix the problem. Whoever replaces them will need to know how to solder and you can order new ones through an electronics store or from an electronics parts provider online. Let me know if you have any further questions about this, good luck.

If your good with a sodering gun and know how to work on printed circuit board, yes you can change the IC's your self for about 50 or so bucks, but if you have no solid state repair experience, I highly advise you to call a pro to assist you with this repair. You will need to get a service manual, the IC,s and then after that you would need to put the TV set into the service mode and make the necassary aligments to the set as well as the convergence circuit.
And I'm afraid that when the IC(s) blew out, it may have taken out a resistor or pico fuse out with it and you will now most likely need the service manual so you can check the voltages on the convergence IC's.
This is not a common DIY'ers fix. Please seek Professional help.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Offhand if your TV is a Philips 46PP9302, then your describes problem indicates a convergence fault. The easiest way to go about this is to replace the entire board which would save you repair time although would be a bit pricey as well as challenging seeking a replacement/refurbished/repaired board. An alternative is component level repair where only the defective components (STK ICs, resistors and pico fuses) would have to be replaced.

If you are considering a DIY (do-it-yourself), please post back which level you would want to approach your concern, availability of a soldering iron, a DVM, a tester and a copy of the Service Manual.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy New Year.

Nice to know that you are good with elctronics repair and have solder skills.

    Thank you for accepting solution.

TV needs STK392-12 quanitty 02 for correct convergence.

Above part is available in Part Store.

I would recommend to buy Service Manual of 46PP930217 from Manual Zone because service manual will give you complete technical info about schematics, voltage data, PCB layout etc.

Good luck and Happy New Year.

Philips 55P8288A tv has a dull color and a red hue.

This sounds Like the the coolant for your piture tube has become cloudy and needs replacement (usually blue or green tube - thats why the image seems ovrely red). It's a big job (labour wise) since completee dissassembly is required ($200-300). It can be done youreself - check out TVrepairkits.com to get the coolant and instructions.
You can confirm that this is the problem by dissassembling the unit to the point where you can view the face of the CRT's (red green and blue) directly.

Red and fuzzy picture can you help on my 50 inch phillips magnavox projection TV

This is a very common failure on Projection TV sets.
Screen looks 3D
Colors don't line up
One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
Screen is bowed or warped.
The other common problem is cloudy lens fluid. After many years the coolant in the blue and green lens will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, bright white, etc. You may even see halos around video.
You can see some example photos and find a solution here on Fixya.

Philips 60 inch rear projection screen is wacky!!

Your TV most likely has one or more possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.
