Question about Whirlpool Dryers

1 Answer

My whirpool dryer won't power on.

The interior light and the signal both work, but the dryer will not power on. What could cause this problem?

I'm a greenhorn at appliances, but I'll have it checked out. I noticed the dryer was running without proper ventilation after electricians had been in the residence; so this could certainly be the problem. Thanks for your suggestion.

First check your power. The most common cause of this is the white plastic thermal fuse, located on the exit chute. These blow whenever air flow (plugged or restricted venting) is improper, or if the unit is running too hot. They also wear out from age. Hope this helps!

Hello there and welcome to Fixya :
This is a fairly common problem with these whirpool dryers.
I will provide you with the 7 most common things to look for
which contribute to the symptom Dryer won't stop are listed below. Check or test each item and watch any available videos. If you are still unable to solve the problem you may need to do additional research and troubleshooting.
Show all parts for model GEW9878LW0 For the symptom you selected, these are the most common parts or causes, ordered by the likelihood of fixing the symptom.
othercausesandconditions.jpg Air Flow Problem The most common problem when a dryer is slow is when the vent is clogged. If the dryer is slow, check the vent from the back of the dryer to the outside of the house. If that is clogged, clear it completely and test the dryer. If the dryer is slow after the vent is cleaned, clean the internal ductwork of the dryer. This will require some disassembly.
blower-wheel-694089-00918612.jpg Blower Wheel

Item # 686172
The blower wheel draws air through the dryer and pushes the air out the vent. If the dryer won't stop, the blower wheel may not be spinning properly, which reduces the air flow. Check to see if the blower wheel is securely fastened to the drive motor shaft.

Whirlpool YGEW9250PW1 Electric dryer control locked problem

Hello,
I had the same problem, but my husband, who is an engineer, figured out that if you pull out the light bulbs that are not reading the correct volts on his volt meter, the control lock light will shut off and the dryer will start working. If you do not know how to do this, you can always buy a new control panel. I know this sounds to simple to be true, but we have bought several new "brains" (control boards), tried unpluging the dryer for days at a time, had an certified whirpool technician come out (who recommended buying a new control board), and nothing worked.
