The only problem is with the spin cycle. It seems that it cannot get enough momentum together to begin the spin. It gives a short effort to spin and then dies, it starts to tumble for a short time to re balance the load and then tries again. This is then repeated again and again. Sometimes it will spin if I press and hold down hard on the top of the machine, or if I manually re distribute the load inside the machine.

Seems that the main panel is defective. The fault suggests that the program controller or the processor is malfunctioning specially when it works for some time. If you can check on the +5 volt to the processor , the power supply factor can be established as a faulty supply or a blown mains capacitor can also shown this fault . So remove the panel and check the components for any visible signs.
First determine whether all the water is pumping out before it goes into spin. If not, check the pump and drain. If its not spinning fast enough with an empty tub check that there isnt any article of clothing caught between the inner and outer tubs or tub top ring. If thats ok check the clutch by turning the main drive pulley CCW. Substantial drag should be felt before the basket overcomes momentum and begins to turn. There is no repair for the clutch on this machine. The transmission must be replaced.
If it is trying to go into a spin during the wash cycle when there is water in it then it sounds like your motor is faulty. The motor has what is called a tachometer in it which regulates the spin speed but if it goes faulty it causes the motor to spin up when it is not meant to. Hope this helps.
Spinning both ways is pretty normal. You did not say if your clothes were clean in the end. You may not see much water when it washes, when it rinses you may see about 1/3 thru the glass. Careful with the door aft wash, wait for 2 minutes before opening.
Does the machine drain on its own or do you drain it manually? The drain pump may be jammed or seized. Try giving the door a light bang with your hand on the handle. The door interlock could be faulty. If the machine starts up after you hit it with your hand on the door handle, the interlock is faulty. Good Luck!!
