We need a bit more information to help you. Presumably if the router was asking you for a WEP key you would know what the problem so we have to assume you can't even see the router? The most likely thing with a NEW laptop is that the wireless modem is turned off. Since you don't say what kind of laptop, the generic answer is that there is a switch or button someplace ( usually well hidden ) that turns wireless on and off. It's usually designated with the little wireless logo. Have a quick peek at the setup guide that came with your machine.
