Dlp tv will not "fire up"

We have a Samsung 46" dlp model #hlr-4667wx. The unit is 18 months old. Powering up has, periodicaly, been "not quite right" since the unit was new. Symptom: the green lamp and timer lights come on immediately when power is turned on, warning "warble" will be very delayed (45 seconds). Sometimes the warble is heard several times before the picture appears. Occasionally, a high speed grating/vibrating sound is heard, especially after power is shut off.(color wheel?) Currently, only the green lamp light flashes on power up and the warning warble is repeated every 45 seconds or so, but no picture or sound occur. These "start attempts" can only be terminated by unplugging the unit from the wall. Other combinations of green and red blinking lights can be created by pressing and holding various buttons on the remote. Would bad colorwheel bearings cause this, or is it more likely the lamp, or something else entirely?

Re: dlp tv will not "fire up"

Hi there, your instruction manual should have a trouble shooting section, and will tell you what various warning lights are indicating (ie the Lamp/Temp lights will flash in a particular sequence), and will give you the probable cause. In some cases, it could be blocked vents (dust causing overheating/shutdown), or just the lamp failure or faulty switch (indicating loose cover).

Re: dlp tv will not "fire up"

It doesn't have a flyback or an HOT genius. It's a DLP.

I've a Samsung DLP Model HLR-4266WX that has started to hum and is distorting the picture. I've replaced the cooling fan on the heat sink in the back and that didn't work. Is there another fan in the set...

Color wheel would be cause of hum noise and distorted picture on screen.
Please note that color wheel is not user level repair and requires expertise because it is located in light engine, the most sensitive and expensive part of dlp tv.
If you are good with electronics stuff fix then have service manual copy in hand to start inspecting color wheel.

Green vertical stripes over marginal picture

sounds like screnn is faulty, hair line crack will do this - if still on warranty send it back-or some hse.insur. will cover the cost of a new t.v. to the same value.

50? Samsung DLP TV Model #HLR-5067W

Did you use an original replacement lamp or an aftermarket replacement? From the price you give, it sounds like an aftermarket lamp, which are notoriously buggy and the problem may be with the lamp. If not, the lamp driver is your next likely culprit. It is also called a lamp power supply or lamp ballast.

It is unlikely that you can do anything yourself.
It sounds to me that there is a power supply problem that has steadily gotten worse and that cannot be confirmed remotely, it must be done on site by an equipped professional.

46" Samsung DLP Lines & Freeze up

This is a possible fault in the power supply, and can be a problem with some decoupler caps on some of the boards. The vertical bars and unstability are usually attributed to having high frequency noise and or clocking pulses crosstalking on to the power distribution lines that run through the boards. This can be switching power supply noise, or cross-talk from clocking pulses.

Another thing that can cause your described fault is unstable clocking between the devices that are reading and writing to the data busses. There are a number of data busses running through the set for the boards to be able to communicate with each other.

The tech will use the process of board swapping to service the set, and then do the adjustments as necessary to make sure the new boards match up.

Yes... DLP sets are fairly expensive to service!

This is my personal opinion. If the set is out of warranty, I would change for a Plasma or LCD set. If you compare the performance of these to ther DLP, the difference is very big. From what I am seeing from a service point of view, the DLP's are lower in reliability.
