The pointer jumping on the screen sounds like you may have picked up a virus. While rare, there are mac viruses. I would try to save all my data documents and any other valuable personal files or lists, then do a clean reinstall of the operating system. Then load our documents back in.
You could try to scan for a virus with a mac virus program, but not many are available for a G4 Power PC (PPC) machine.
Two possible things are wrong either your hard drive has gone or your system has corrupted. Put your instal or system disk in start it
up holding down the c key. Once it has started check that the hard
drive exists by go to the menu bar and selecting the disk utility. If
the hard drive shows it means that it is okay run the disk utility check
drive and then run the repair permissions. Then try restarting, if it
works then you are back up and running again. If the drive shows up and
you restart and the same thing shows up with the grey screen, you will
need to reinstal your system. You do this by starting up with the instal
disk holding down the c key and run the instal script. To keep your
hard drive contents your will MUST use the preserve users instal.
your hard drive does not show up the hard drive is probably a gonner
and you will have to purchase a new hard drive and instal a fresh
boot from the system disk, you have to select language as if you are instaling but the next screen has a utilities folder along the top menu, select disk utility from the drop down menu and when it opens select your hard drive then select repair disk (do not ever select anything other than repair or repair permissions the other ones wipe the drive) if this is either ok or repaired then select repair permissions and run that, it can take a long time. If that runs quit the disk utility and select the start up disk utility and select your hard drive, it should say what system is installed, if it is greyed out then your system disk is wrong, probably have deleted a bit of it, then perform an archive and install.
In your applications folder is a utilities folder, in this select disk utility, open it and select your hard drive and then select repair disk, if this is ok then select repair permissions, this can take a while, then try again. Also start up with the right hand shift key held down, this does some system housekeeping and goes in to safe boot.
The new hard drive needs to be partitioned and formatted for mac before you can install the OS. Start the disk utility from top menu (after you booted the install CD). Then creat the partition and and formate it with mac filesystem. The drive will now show up so you can install system.
can always take it to the apple store and demonstrate the problem there,
you'll probably receive a replacement. If you have issues with the
warranty, there are third party places that will find our what's wrong.

such jpg files need the original software when they were modified into a jpg format. like an adobe jpg or a corel draw jpg wont open in paint until the respective software is installed. secondly jpg file has a header file and check sum , if the header file is missing or destroyed by a virus or already there is a virus on ones system the jpg files have to be isolated and treated for antivirus which reapirs the file and seperates the virus from the header maintaining the integrity of the file.try to isolate one jpg file and run a scan for virus on another computer, if the file gets repaired use the antivirus to repair your files
You should try to re-install your OS. If you want to do it yourself, the good

do you usually lean or put any pressure on the area above the slot-load optical drive? If you have anything flat and plastic around 1/4" (about 1/2 the width as a USB plug) stick it in the optical drive until you just feel it going past the door, and rotate 90 degrees so it opens it a little. See attached photos if you aren't sure what I am talking about
