Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, to my knowledge:

  • an internal modem on most computers would be for a dial-up connection with maximum possible connection speed of 56kbps; whereas current mode of Internet connection is ADSL that uses either LAN/Ethernet port or USB from the external modem with higher speed;
  • the internal modem and the external modem makes use of standard 2-wire telephone lines;
  • both have to have an account with the ISP (internet service provider);
  • the internal modem if engaged/active would not allow telephone calls to be made on the same line (voice only);
  • the external ADSL modem would have a splitter that would allow simultaneous modem/Internet activity while making a telephone call (voice/data).
Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy New Year.

It has an onboard ethernet connection that can be used in conjunction with an external modem for internet connections, unless you are asking about dial-up. Depends on what type of internet service you have, but if you have broadband of any kind, you will have to connect the onboard ethenet connection to an external modem.

I have dial up internet connection. As soon as I placed the connection in the new computer p6340a the phone line was dead. this should not happen until a connection is made. Ted Andrews

If your modem is fried, this can result in a dead line... disconnect the line from the computer and test the line with a phone... if the tone is present, then connect the line back to the pc... If the line goes dead, you have a faulty modem or corrupt drivers

Desktop wont connect to internet but laptop will

Is your cable modem also a wireless router?

From my search on it, it is not a wireless router.

This means you need to attach a hub or a wireless router to your cable modem so that more than one computer can connect to the internet simultaneously.

Go out and buy a wireless router. Connect the wireless router to your cable modem.

Connect your desktop to the wireless router with an ethernet cable.

Then you should have internet on your desktop.

Let me know if this helps. Give me a good rating and vote for me please.

When I hook my cable from the modem to the tower It will not connect to the internet. My internet supplier told me he thought it was the port on the tower

Is it a network cable? If yes then you may need network card drivers for the current one or a new network card. Perhaps buying a usb external one if you dont know how to open and mess inside computers. Show the shop the cable and modem.

when you had the internet installed, did you install the modem software for the modem? without the modem software, the modem cannot find the pc. if the modem connects directly to the pc, or even through a wired/wireless router, the modem software is a requirement. (i just went through all this myself w/ att dsl). if you have, or add, a router, that software will also need to be installed for those on the network to connect to the internet as well.

Datafax Modem with SmartCP is used for what?

Sounds like what you have is the old Dial up modem which is now not used very much. This is a cheaper internet option but with saying that it is very slow for internet use. I would not recommend this and just ignore that it exists.

Hope this helps

Very well could have toasted you network card. If everything else works, try installing a different one (and drivers) that is known to work. MM85
