The first thing to check is that both of your computers are assigned to the same workgroup name. Right click 'my computer' and select properties. Change the workgroup name so that they are identical on both machines. You will need to reboot if you change the name one one or both of the machines.

Do you have to connect the router to the computer to use it

You have to be connected via either Wired or Wireless connection to use a router. You can use wireless exclusively, wired connection is not required, but often handy for troubleshooting connectivity issues. If you are using DSL or Cable modem, the modem is connected to the uplink port of the Router, then you either connect wired via port 1, 2, 3 or 4 (they are all the same) or a wireless connection (Default settings are unsecure wireless for most routers)

WHY IS MY WIRED LIGHT ON MY ROUTER OFF I AM CONECTED TO THE INTERNET BUT WIRED LIGHT IS NOT ON

The wired light turn on only when your computer is connected to your router via a physical cable on port 1, 2, 3 or 4.

If you are connected wireless is normal that the light stays off.

Does the belkin G wireless router require a wired PC or can it just be connected to the cable modem for wireless use?

You may need to connect it via USB to initially set it up, refer to the instruction manual.

While in use, any wireless router only needs a power supply and connection to a modem for internet access. It will not need to be wired (permanently).

Wireless router - establish wired connection with desktop PC

You are right, cable connection is more secure. The steps are:
1.) Connect the PC to the router with a crossover cable.
2.) Once connected, try to see if you are in the network. If you are, then you are ready to connect to the net.

Pc connection problems

Sounds like you are setup to use Internet Connection Sharing. don't do this. Have each computer connect to the internet via the router. If the router is wireless connect all computers wirelessly to the router that are wireless capable and any computers that are not wireless capable, connect them to the router via a cat5 cable to the cat5 ports on the router. This will solve your problem. BPCS
