Need to Rewrite/Reboot Dell Desktop 2400 series and cant

I have tried to F12 at the Start up, but there is no option that allows me to insert the OS Windows XP disk and rewrite it. I have the original OS disk that came with the computer too. I need help. I have little time to get this desktop up and running for my fast growing business.

Mircenaj your solution has been tried and wont work. Thanks though. I tried DickCanFixIt's solution and pressing delete at the start up isnt an option. I tried it anyway, and it ignored the command.

Actually guys, I pressed F12 at the start up and bypassed the set adminstrative account that no one can remember the password to. So I created another administrative account in safe mode and now I will just start using it. I wont have to reboot the entire computer system. Thanks (Why didnt dell give an option to bypass a password if you forget it???)

yea it is the original OS on the computer. And I do see the logo. It just doesnt accept the del button. The only two options are F2 and F12. F2 being the set up and F12 being the boot options. I would choose the cdrom reboot option but it wouldnt register and would just keep giving me infinite retry messages.

Take the battery out for an hour. There is a jumper near the battery (J1, J2 ?) Set to opposite position and turn on power. Shut down and reset jumper to original position. In setup (F2) set first boot device as CDROM. Hopefully this will get you to the install point or maybe to a point where you can repair the XP. If not try again. Sometimes it takes several times for the computer to forget what it supposed to do.

Press Delete at start up, change the first boot device to your cd drive, then F10 to save settings and restart. Put your Windows XP disc in the drive and press any key when prompted to boot from the cd.

Other ways you can get into the BIOS are pressing F2, pressing space, or pressing Esc. But the 2400 (and most other Dells) you get in by pressing F2. Are you sure your keyboard is recognized by the system? Do you see the screen with the Dell logo when you power on the computer (this is when you should be pressing Del)?

Sounds like "boot from CD" is not enabled in your cmos setup. Press F2 to access the CMOS setup and go to boot options. I am not sure where that would be on a Dell cmos, but navigate around to find it. Once you have enabled boot from CD, and if you have the OEM cd in the drive, you should get a countdown option to press some key to boot from the CD.

If you are using this PC as a second hand unit particularly for a business for security you really need to reload it as you really do not know what might be on it. The last thing you want is to have to do it later when you have less time.

Whenever we buy PCs for work we always wipe them down and reload them with only what we want as most manufacturers load them with additional junk you don't need

Put in your CD that came with your computer and restart the computer. It should start up automatically and from there you can re-install windows. Im sure you know what to do from then on. =) Good luck.

This is an error code that means Problem Booting Response hold down your Ctrl+Alt+Delete and see if it does not reset the boot series. it means a corrupt boot code you can try and use F2 to try to get into Bios and then f12 to get to the hard drive reboot option.

You most likely need to reinstall windows. Insert your windows cd or dvd into your disc drive and then reboot the computer. Make sure you backup any of your important files first.

I have a dell dimension 2350. I want to take it back to factory setting how?

If you have the original dell restore disc's
then insert disc one and reboot the computer

As it boots up enter the BIOS and in there tell it to boot from CD first.

It should then boot from the restore CD and from then on just follow the prompts.

ALTERNATELY it may offer as it boots up a "press F? to start restore" or similar use that option to start the restore process.

Put your windows installation disc in and boot from that, when it gives you the option to repair, choose that or go to restore and restore the computer back a day or two before the problem.

Dell Vostro 200 won't boot

From your description you have corrupted the boot files of the machine

Try hitting F8 repeatedly when you power the machine up that should put you into safe mode

If you can get there go for a system restore

If that fails there is a program called ERD Commander which was written by a company called Winternals but is now under Mocrosofts control.

That replaces the normal OS and allows you to do repairs

Make sure that the OS disk you are using is a bootable version not just a collection of files

My computer caught a virus

Yes this is an unfortunate virus that has attacked your system at this time. you can clear all partitions and reinstall the entire operating system. this will bring back the OS but, you will lose all info that was stored in the partitioned drives. You can do this by inserting the xp or vista disk then, restart the system and before the dell bios flash gos away, hit f4 then, choose boot disk. this will start the reinstallation of the OS again.

Dimension 2400 Turns Itself Off

I think you might have a failing hard drive. if you go into the Boot menu by pressing F12 while it is booting up you will see an option named Hard Drive Diagnostic. This is what you want to run. If it returns an error code of 7 then the drive is most likely failing or failed.
