Meade lX90 scope finding problem

I am trying to get a donated Meade LX90 working for a non-profit educational program. I went thru the set up, but when it gets to finding anything it is way off. I tried training the motors. The Az (side to side) menu seemed to work right, but when I got to dec (up and down) it bombed. No up and down in that mode. It does go up and down when it tries to find North (which I think is off maybe 5-10 degrees) it moves up and aims in that direction so the up and down motor works, but not when in the training mode. Maybe that's the problem? I got the finder aligned with the scope OK. The GPS reports its working OK. I reset the time which was off. Any ideas you have would be great.

Thanks
Den

Go back to square one-- in this order

RESET the hand-controller
Calibrate Motors
Train Drives in BOTH axis
Enter Time, Date, and Site-- Daylight Savings NO -- right now in the USA
Calibrate sensors (if you have this option)

Then do a two star Automatic alignment-- you will need to CENTER each alignment star and they may NOT be inside the eyepiece but nearby.

Here is a manual-- http://www.meade.com/manuals/TelescopeManuals/LXseries/LX-90_manual.pdf

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

The Meade 8" SCT LX90 is a very good all round unit. Although angry, you will find it is well worthwhile persevering.
The back plate, called the optical back, takes an eyepiece holder into which you can also fit your diagonal prism for comfortable viewing. It is part 3 in the diagram here, Fig 1
http://www.meade.com/manuals/TelescopeManuals/LXseries/LX90-LNT.pdf

All you need is the right size holder for this scope, such as
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/202598-REG/Meade_07182_Eyepiece_Holder_aka_Visual.html

Any telescope shop can sell you one, but take care to get one that also fits the barrel of your prism, which will be either 1.25" or 2"

Calibrate motors and then TRAIN the drives-- this sets the gear backlash.

You should Calibrate motors every time you take it outside and Train drives at least once every year. The symptom you describe is called "rubberbanding".

Train the drives.

I have a meade lx90 8inch 3 years old with autostar 497--when i try to raise the scope up it keeps drifting down also having problems with intermitant slewing on set up-both motors working ok

This is called "rubber-banding". Your scope needs to be re-trained.

So, setup a target during the day at least 100 feet away from the scope (200 feet would be better, Calibrate motors using the same power source you use at night, and Train Drives. Later after dark, do a Calibrate sensors on Polaris.

You should train drives about once per year, and calibrate sensors about twice per year.

You may want to update the firmware before you Train Drives. The latest version is 43Eg available on the Meade.com web site. You with need the Autostar Updater Software also available on the Meade web site under Customer Service---- Downloads. Version 5.9

Problem with alignment of Meade LX90 8" telescope

Start from scratch-

RESET the hand controller.

Calibrate motors using the same power source you will use outside.

Re-train the drives

Calibrate sensors on Polaris

Use either the 110 volt power cord, or buy a 12 volt power pack and the proper Meade 12 volt cable. (www.scopestuff.com carries the right 12 volt cable)

If your scope is NOT the LNT or GPS model you must level the tripod before you align. Go to home depot and buy the $3 small plastic two way bubble level, or the bulls-eye style bubble level.

Further trouble, I suggest going to the LX90 Yahoo group forum, and asking questions there.

Good Luck

The best thing I can suggest is to find a local astronomy club and have them help you.
To find a local astronomy club just go to the nearest Observatory or Planetarium and ask them where to find one.
Also you can go to WWW.ASTRONOMY.Com , click on COMMUNITY, and on the pulldown click on 'Astronomy Groups.'

MEADE LX90 TELESCOPE

I ended up replacing the Hand Controller with a new one.
After that it started working. I brought the new one on E-bay.
They seem to have the best prices. Forget about talking to Meade. Their innate ability to reply to your phone calls or emails just doesn't work. I will ***** buy a telescope from them again.
