Power failure & dell dimensions 5100 will not turn on

While away today, there was a power failure. Now dell dimensions will not turn on. Have checked power supply and its OK. Have checked breaker, no problem. There is a green light on inside of the dimensions and the monitor & sounds lights are on. Is there anything else that I can do before taking to a service person?

I had a similar problem. It does boil down to the power supply or the motherboard. You can't just check the voltage off of a pc power supply it requires a load to work at all. You can buy a power supply tester at most computer stores. At that point you would:
1. disconnect power supply from motherboard
2. plug big jack that was in motherboard into tester
3. turn on power supply and see what the lights say.

OR (be sad here) If you do the above and the power supply is good then a pretty good chance your motherboard took a hit and is DOA.

Try the solution of unpugging stuff first. But a single light on your motherboard is bad news. When I had that it indicated that a capacitor on my motherboard had fried and my motherboarde went with it.

Hey.

Be sure to check the power supply for the correct voltage outputs. Try also restarting the BIOS, there should be a reset jumper located next to the bios chip. If these steps are unsuccessful, then try the following sir:

Remove modem from system.

Clear CMOS [
Complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor]. If all else fails, just remove the battery for 10 minutes. Remove all non-essential parts, leave nothing but the following connected to motherboard or power supply:

1. video card
2. x amount of memory modules (i.e the min needed)
3. CPU + headsink fan
4. Power switch plug

Then turn system AC power back on and try to start system. If it
fails, try clearing CMOS and retry.

" Is there anything else that I can do before taking to a service person?"

Yes, you can unplug the computer for about one minute, then reconnect the power and attempt to turn it on. Do any of the fans come on? Any beeping from the motherboard? Any lights flash anywhere on the comupter when you do that? Answers to those questions will be helpful to the technician if you do have to take it in for service. If you have a spare power supply around I would try that too before resorting to a service call.

Dell 5100 will not turn on

Power "Outages" are not the problem, it is when it comes back on again, and the Power Switch is still ON, that's the problem, the "Inrush" current of reconnection, frequently "Blows" the Power Supply's, I suspect that is what has happened.. You probably need to replace your power Supply, simply open unit up, and remove PSU, via four screws at rear, and get a similar unit, they are relatively inexpensive, under $60.00 usually. Reinstall PSU and connect up all power plugs and you should be good to go.

Dell Dimension 5100 power up problem

I had same issue with dimension 5100 Desktop. I work at Circuit City as the Lead Technician. I found that swapping the power supply did fix the problem! When i initially tested the power supply with a standard power supply tester, the power supply appeared normal. But after swapping the PC works great. Thx for the good idea!

Dell Dimension 5100 Won't start up

Hi

First disconnecting the power cord and re-seat all connections (Keyboard, Mouse espercially). Connect up the power cord and try powering the PC.

To help you troubleshoot a problem, Dell Dimension 5100 has four diagnostic lights labeled "1," "2," "3," and "4" on the front panel. When the computer starts normally, the lights flash. After the computer starts, all four lights display solid green. If the computer malfunctions, the color and sequence of the lights identify the problem.

If the computer failed to start up check the diagnostic lights color and sequence and Check the link below for more info (Assuming you have another system that can access internet)
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim5100/en/sm/tshoot1.htm#wp1120147

Alternatively, contact Dell Support with the diagnostic lights color and sequence to raise a service call if the system if under warranty.
