Annoying pop up error message

I keep getting a pop up error message that Internet Explorer has "encountered a problem and must close" etc. etc. Happens many times each day. Usually happens when I am signed into my gmail/google talk account.

I would check your computer for viruses with either an online virus checker or an antivirus program.

Pop up as i tried to download ...said I had to call 1 885-409-6239

It is a scam and Malware. It is often termed 'ransomware'. Just press CTRL + ALT +Delete. Then click Task Manager and close Internet Explorer. Or you can just turn the computer off at the wall socket.

There is nothing wrong with your computer, it is just a scare tactic to get you to phone and get some of your money on a credit card.

Not saving to desktop as ''problem occured Close and try

Let's try to isolate the problem first

1) Try downloading something different from a different website. If you succeed, then there is a problem with the original file or the connection to the original website. If you get the same error message, go to the next step.

2) Check the disk for errors. Run chkdsk c: /r. It will tell you that it cannot lock the disk blah blah blah. Anwser "yes" and restart. It will take quite a while to check the disk, but it will fix all fixable errors. Then, try again. If it doesn't work, go to the next step

3) Do you have a "download accelerator" installed and running (e.g. GetIt, Donaload Accelerator Plus, etc??) Some websites do not work well with download accelerators. Don't ask me why. They just don't. Either disable it or uninstall it and try again.

4) Try a different browser. If you're using Internet Explorer, try using FireFox or Opera

Please, report back to see if any of these helped.

Intermet Explorer will not stay open!

Hey Steve,

Welcome to Fixya, my name's Chris.
This is unfortunately a common problem, known as malware. Fortunately it has a simply solution.
You need to download Spybot from here:

As you cannot open your internet browser, the best idea would be to download the Spybot.exe file onto a friend's computer, or at an internet cafe, and copy it over to a USB drive or cd-r/dvd-r. Then install it onto your computer.
Run it, search for updates and download them. Then click Scan for Problems. It'll take a while, maybe 20 minutes or so, depending on the specs of your machine. Don't use Messenger or browsers or anything while you are doing this. When it has finished, click Fix Selected Problems.
Then click the Immunize tab. Click Immunize.

That should fix it for you, mate. If you noticed that SPybot wanted you to use Elevated Administrator Privileges when Immunizing, just navigate to User Accounts in Control Panel and turn off User Control Access, reboot, and Immunize again. I think this is just an annoying feature of Vista, however.

For general further maintenance, you could download ncleaner from here:

and install it, Clean, Cleanup Registry etc

Good Luck!

PS Try downloading Firefox and having that as an emergency in case you need a working browser in the future, or better, having it as your default browser. Chris :)

When I close 1 window, it closes all the other windows

Go to and download Adaware Free Edition, and run a scan for spyware. If you dont have a good Anti-virus scanner do a search in google for AVG free. Those two are really good at keeping your machine relatively free of Virii and spyware.

If after a scan of both anti spyware and Anti virus shows clean, reboot your machine and try to open and close some internet explorer windows again. If this is still a problem you may want to find out what version of Internet explorer you are running, if it is version 7 you could try to repair the installation and see if that helps.

Alternatively you could remove Internet Explorer 7 altogether and continue using version 6 if it has no problems running.
Hope this helps.

Internet Explorer Closes

If your system wasn't set up to do MS Auto-update from the factory, I recommend you use it.
It is likely that the IE and possibly other Windows functions need one of the hundreds of tweaks MS constantly makes to try to keep their Edsel working properly.

Open your Control Panel from the misnamed 'Start' menu, click on Automatic Updates and check (or set) your settings.

BTW, lots of luck with your Compaq/HP laptop; I won't own another one nor service any HP system again.
