The answer is two fold.

1. The system can be installed on any number of computers using the same install disk.

2. Microsoft frowns on this because using it on more than one PC box is considered copyright infringement.

Also, some PCs come with install disk that contain only drivers for the PC hardware it came with. It is not a good idea to use this CD on another PC.

How to restore dell latitude E6510 to factory settings

Restoring A Dell computer/laptop back to the Factory setup
If you do not have a RECOVERY CD then contact Dell to purchase this Recovery CD for your model Dell laptop. Boot up using the Recovery CD and follow the instructions.
The other way is to re- install Windows using a Windows installation CD; it must match the Windows version on the Windows Product Code label on the bottom of your laptop. Boot up using the Windows installation CD and follow the instructions. Next install all of the Dell's computer/laptop device drives. Next install the Windows service packs (SP2 & SP3 for XP, SP1 & SP2 for Vista) Next Activate Windows via the Internet or by phone. Next install your programs - Microsoft Office etc. Next click on Start - Programs - Windows Update (for the latest updates).
The device drivers for your model computer/laptop can be downloaded from the Dell WEB support site. To download the drivers from Dell WEB site, select your model desktop or laptop, or a better option, type in the Service Tag number, this is printed on the label on the bottom of the laptop and on the back or sides of a desktop. (If the Service Tag label is missing then go the BIOS setting and on one of the BIOS pages, the Service Tag number will be displayed). The Service Tag will open the page where the drivers specific for your model computer/laptop are located. Formatting a laptop is the same as doing it on a desktop computer.
If you are using the Windows installation CD then to get the laptop to boot up with the Windows CD you can change the BIOS boot startup device and make the CD the first boot device.

I have 3 operating systems installed so i need to lose two of them dont ask cos i dont know how they got there

I recommend you do a clean reinstall XP Pro using the Windows XP Pro installation CD. Delete all the partitions and create a new partition.

This is generally how your format the hard disk and install Windows.
First you need a Windows XP or Windows Vista installation CD and the product installation code, which is printed on the Windows label on the bottom of your laptop.
Boot up with the Windows installation CD start and follow the instructions to install Windows.
Next Delete the existing Windows partition.
Next Create a new partition.
Next format this new partition - Format the partition in NTFS not a quick format. This will prepare the Windows for a clean install.
Next create a User(name) and company name (normally Home is all you need).
Further into the installation, you will be required to put in the Installation code.

During the final stages of installation you need to create an User or Users that will use this computer.

When you finished installing Windows you need to install the laptop's device drivers. You need to use a computer with Internet access to download these drivers from the laptop manufacturer's WEB site and install these drivers on your laptop.
Next connect a LAN cable to the LAN port from your computer to your DSL or cable modem and you need to Activate the Windows installation on the Microsoft WEB site.
Next up need to upgrade Windows from the Microsoft WEB site including Service pack.
Next you need to install your programs

You can download the device drivers from Dell WEB site, the support download page. Make sure you select your model desktop or laptop, better still, type in the Service Tag number, it is printed on the label on the bottom of the laptop and on the back or sides of a desktop. (If the Service Tag label is missing then go into the BIOS setting and on one of the BIOS pages, the Service Tag number will be displayed). This will open the page where the specific drivers for your model computer are located. Also make sure you select the Windows of the drivers for your Windows operating system. I want to format my notebook laptop how is it?

1. You need to back up your files / documents on to an external drive.

2. Make sure you have a windows set up cd, the drivers (your laptop should have come with a drivers cd when you purchased it, if not, you can download the drivers on your laptop manufacturer's website, make sure you select the correct laptop model and operating system before you download drivers), and installers for applications that you have installed on your pc (ms office, etc.)

3. Just put the windows cd in and reboot your pc, it should automatically boot up to the windows set up. Just follow the installation prompts. Your pc may reboot several times during the installtion.

4. Once its done installing windows and it's already booted up to your desktop, Install the drivers and your other applications.
