I have verified that they are the STK392-110's, would it be better to replace them with -150's or 180's or stick with the original? Thank you

  • flash18 Jan 06, 2009

I ordered the replacement chips, I ordered STK392-150's to replace the STK392-110's. I hope they arrive before this weekend. I have done some more troubleshooting, and quite a bit of reading, what I have is a pincushion, red only, on the horizontal. I downloaded the manual and before making any adjustments wrote down all the service numbers for the set. I was able to get a much better picture after some course and fine adjustments of the red only..... I have the pdf files of the entire set and would like some advice on which resistors I should look at, by resistor number..... example: R8C26... From the schematic, I am a little confused... can I send the particular PDF file to you and you could recommend the ones to check? Just to simplify things? flash18@bellsouth.net

Thank you for all your help, Jon

I oredered a pair of STK392-110's, and set all the course and fine adjustments back to the factory settings. If I send a PDF file of the convergence IC's, can you point me in the directions as to which resistors, by part number, I should disconnect half of and check?? my email is flash18@bellsouth.net

  • flash18 Jan 06, 2009

Thank you for the reply, I understand how to check them, I am just unsure which ones to check, after looking at the wiring diagram, I feel that the problem is isolated to the red horizontal only, and from that chip, only the red part ( one of the three colors) should I check the power in, out, ground side...??? not really sure on this type of circuit. Thanks again for the prompt reply.... Jon

Thanks for all the help!!! Replaced the convergence IC's, looked over all the resistors, everything looked fine..... put it all back together and did the big convergence and the picture is better than when I purchased it!!!!! Cost..... 28.00 Thanks again!!!!

Your screen has gone crazy on you because your convergence IC's have gone bad.   These IC's operate at a very high temp, and usually only last 4-5 years.
If you remove the back of the set, you will want to look for the BIGGEST heatsink in there, on that heatsink, you will see 2 lage IC's , probably STK392-110, or STK392-150's or something close...regardless - you can go on ebay to order the new ones, but MAKE SURE they are Genuine SANYO IC's and not counterfiet cheapies. the cheap ones may only last 2 months..
You will also need some "Heat transfer paste" - you can pick this up at radio shack.   Once you remove the old IC's, test all the large resistors near them.. pull one side of the resistor out of the board so you can check it out of circuit. they will usually have the value in Ohms, printed directly on the resistor, but you may have to use the resistor color code to find out what value they are....However, usually if there is any damage, the resistor will look like it has been HOT or fried. replace the IC's and any bad resistors, and you should be good to go.   If after replacing the IC's and any defective resistors, the convergence is still bad, make sure to use a multimeter to check ALL fuses on the boards, --- sometimes when the IC's go, they will take out a fuse to the convergence power supply. If you find any bad fuses, replace them accordingly!   If this STILL doesnt make it look right, you will need to find out how to get into service mode and do a coarse convergence adjustment. This information can be found in the Service manual for your set. If you dont have one you can download it at servicemanuals.net   Hope that helps!

I suggest you stick with the original numbers... I have had a few times that substitution just WOULD NOT work, even though on paper the 120's and 150's have the same pinout.... why spend money on parts that MAY work, when you know 120's will work..

let me know how it turns out!

You NEED to set the settings back to the "original" settings BEFORE you install your STK's - Otherwise you could damage them. You should never change data with bad components in the board, it can damage other components in the circuit, and it will only make your job 100 times harder when you install the new parts... I will also say again, I have NEVER had 150's work in place of 110's. The STK 392-150 is mainly a Hitachi IC, and doesnt seem to work in the Mitsubishi's, or much else for that matter. If it were me, I would have installed 110's and also installed a secondary 12v dc power supply - this power supply can be used to power a small PC fan mounted to the convergence IC heatsink- this will GREATLY extend the life of the convergence IC's.

I usually just desolder one leg of each resistor, and pull it out of the circuit to measure resistance... you can find out the resistance value of each - sometimes they have the value stamped on them, aka: 2.2 ohm -- or if you have the service manual, look up the resistor location, like R453 for example - then look in the serv manual and in the parts section it will tell you that R453 = 1 Watt 2.2 ohm 5% Metal film resistor.

Glad to hear everything worked out! you should be able to enjoy your TV for several more years now... and just think, even after it becomes the "video game tv" if it ever fails again, YOU can fix it and save $375.00!

Hour glass cannot adjust red horizontal convergence

The most likely cause is shorted convergence chips and possibly a few pico fuses.

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get a convergenece repair kit with instructions from the links below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2
Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

Can't control red convergence on VS-45607

The STKs are three channel ICs they each control horizontal and vertical of one color the third channel controls part of green and the other half of green is controled by the other ICs third channel. Its customary for the Ics to fail and only have one channel bad in the IC. However its recomended to change both because of the bad Ic having green it can actually weaken the other IC and that one will fail shortly.

First thing a tech would do is solder around Convergence amps then check to see if you can align by menu then if can not. Change amps and maybe resistors.

Mitsubishi VS 4552A

One of your convergence IC's has either cracked loose or burned out. The IC will have to be resoldered or replaced and then the convergence circuits realigned. If you do not have experience in repairing convergence circuits then have a qualified tech handle it for you. This is by far the most common failure in the projection sets and a good tech can have it fixed in about an hour and a half. I charge $150 for that but shops in your area will vary, so call around.
