Hi, I had this problem too but thankfully I figured it out after a investigating a few settings. I was very frustrated because the light came on and the buttons would manipulate my MacBook Pro and MacBook sound, but nothing came out of the speakers. Solution:1.) Click on System Preferences, 2.) Choose "Sound", 3.) Select the "Output" button in the middle of the top bar, 4.) in the selectable menu, choose USB (of course your speakers must be plugged in for this to show). Tada! You can even balance the Left and Right speakers in this menu. Hope that works for you too!
The speaker you got is USB powered. Upon connecting it to your Mac, it should undergo the Auto Detection process. When you connected it, do you see any signs of power on the speaker? If yes, it is getting power. After connecting the USB cable, connect the headphone jack to the audio jack on your Mac.

What sort of speakers are they, USB connected or Line-out connected?
On your Mac, open System Preferences (from the Apple Menu or from the Dock), locate Sound (normally the last icon in the second row) and it will list all the available audio outputs available to you. Mine lists "Internal Speakers - Line Out - Digital Out - Soundflower". If I had the HK Soundsticks with the USB connection they would be listed as well.
Select the output that is appropriate to the speakers you have and check that the volume is set away from zero and that should be that.
If you have USB connected then check USB, if they are normal speakers with an iPod headphone type connector then check line out.
Make sure that any lights on the speakers are on and the volume know is set half way.
If there are no lights on the speakers (and I don't know of any that don't have at least one indicator light) then the problem lies with the speakers.

The USB version of the soundsticks was specifically designed for the mac and they worked just by plugging them in and then telling the system to use them instead of the analogue outputs. Unless someone has produced drivers for Windows XP for these speakers I think that you will probably not be able to use them.
