Microsoft is aware of the problem. Everyone has the same problem. It is a bug in Zune firmware. One option that works is to disconnect the internal battery and that will reset the system. Here is a link to the problem http://www.tomsguide.com/us/Zune-Media-Player-Bug,news-3236.html

hold the back button and the up button until you see the Zune logo then release. if this doesnt work then you are going to have to reset your Zune....however this will loose all the data on the zune so your music/movies will be completely gone. you are going to need to press and hold the back and up button until the zune logo appears then hold the back,play/pause, and the center button until you see "please wait"
Reset Zune: Press and hold the back button while pressing up on the control pad. Connect Zune to a power source: If the Zune device is in sleep mode, this action will wake the Zune device and turn it on. If the battery does not have a charge, you may have to wait several minutes for the Zune device to turn on.
Also, make sure that the hold button on top of your zune is turned to the off position.
Hope this helps!

To do this, use a small screwdriver to pop off the plastic shielding where
the Zune cable plugs into and remove the two screws on either side of the plug.
Next pop the cover off and locate the battery plug at the top left corner of the Zune, using your screw driver, pop the cable connection half way off, and do
this to the other plug on the right side. Wait 3 seconds, then push down the
right connector and then the left battery connector. Your Zune should start up
immediately. Press the backing of the Zune down (make sure headphone jack is
aligned) and put the screws and cover back in place.
It's an easy process but if you're unsure don't attempt it.
To restart the Zune device, follow these steps:
1. Set the Hold switch to the unlocked position.
Note To make sure that the Hold switch is in the unlocked position, you may have to move the switch back and forth until the switch is in the correct position.
2. Press and hold the Back button while you press the top of the Zune pad
I turned on my Zune and the screen froze so I turned it off but it would not turn back on.
I went online and read somewhere that if the screen freezes then you should press up and back and wait for the zune insignia to come on. Well my zune was not just frozen it would not go on but I tried the up and back thing and it worked. it took about 9-13 seconds but it worked so give it a chance and if that doesn't work try charging it overnight. Hope that helps :D
