Thanks for your suggestion. I pinged, and got 4 pings and 4 replies. But my knowledge of computers is such that I do not know what this tells me, or what I should do next! Any ideas, please?
It took me a while to realize what issue you were talking about..lol. Anyways, when you get positive replies in DOS that indicates to me that there is nothing wrong with the domain name. I would say there is something wrong with your internet explorer or something else. Make sure you type www.wdc.com and not wdc.com in the Address bar of internet explorer.
Let me know the results. I would also like to know if my other suggestions helped you use the external hard drive. From what I understand, that was your main concern. The other issue with the wdc.com occured because you were trying to get assistance with getting it to work. Is this correct?

When we say your computer is showing local intranet but not the internet then it must be an issue with some of the settings and could also be firewall settings. Lets try these steps to check whats going on.
First i'd say please go to command prompt (START -> RUN -> CMD) Type IPCONFIG and check for the IP ADDRESS and DEFAULT GATEWAY. (Normally the IP ADDRESS starts 192.168.xx.xx) Then PING the Default gateway by entering the Default Gateway( Command for pinging the default gateway is PING "default gateway number") Check whats the reply you are getting and it should say Packet Sent=4, Received =4 and Lost =0.
Then type ping www.google.com and check whether you gets the same reply Packet Sent=4, Received =4 and Lost =0.
If you gets all these positive then there is no problem with your network. We have to check for the internet explorer settings. First you check with this settings and revert with details. So that i ould be able to assist you better.
Jus Powercycle the Whole N/w Unplug Modem and Router Plug Modem First and then Router Check Wired Internet to Router if that Works, wireless will be Online
ping the face book site that is go to the DOS prompt and type ping www.face book.com this will give give 4 replies back if the site is responding. If not then you have a firewall issue or a DNS (Domain Name service) issue. Ping this ip 66.220.153.15 if you get the site with this then there is a problem with the DNS.
You are saying you cannot connect through the router ... Change the ethernet cable and/or try other portson the router.
Does your computer connect to the WWW when you wire it directly? If it will work when connected directly then it should work through the router. That is your test.
how would you know if there is a connection. in the manual of the router, or below the unit, there should be a sticker that says IP address and might read something like 192.168.1.1 or equivalent. Now, go to Start - run - cmd in your router and type in Ping the numbers you found there. if you get 'reply from 192... " 4 times, it means you have a valid connection between your computer and the router, else no .
If you get a reply, then try ping 4.2.2.2 which is a universal DNS. if you get replies for this, then it means you are able to connect to the internet but not able to browse. then it could mean a browser issue.
I would suggest you try another browser / pc to make isolate the problem

follow instructions for setup. 1. in your computer network adapter TCP/IP settings, set into "Obtain as IP address Automatically". 2. do the same(step 1) in other computer 3. after saving the settings you should have now a network for two computer thru router. 4. one of your computer should have an IP 192.168.0.2 or 192.168.1.2 as most of router default IP series is 192.168.0.0 5. if you have this series of IP for both computer you have already a network 6. to test if both computer is communicating run this command at DOS or Command Prompt( click start, run and command the click OK 7. at DOS command prompt type PING 192.168.0.2 (ping the IP address of the other computer in your network) 8. or you can also ping the computer name like PING mycomputer(your laptop or desktop computer name) 9. successful PING should have a "reply from" results.
I would suggest a few things
1) see if a firmware update for the device
2) It may be a DNS issue
can you post the model
what status are the lights on the repeater
next do an IPCONFIG /ALL - see later and some ping tests to see if its a DNS ISSUE
ipconfig /all
TWO Methods to do that - some people have problems with ONE----
ONE ---------------------------------
start
run
cmd
ipconfig /all
rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste
TWO -----------------------------------------------
Start, Run, CMD to open a DOS window and type:
IPCONFIG /ALL >C:\RESULT.TXT
Open C:\RESULT.TXT with Notepad and copy/paste the entire results here.
NEXT lets see if you can get out onto the internet with both names and IP's - its possible the IP number you get back on the first test is different to the one I post {I'm in UK} so use the number you get instead of mine
------------------------------------------------
try ping the name and then the IP see below
start
run
cmd
C:\Documents and Settings\wayne>ping {the default gateway ipaddress you got above }
