What can be done about a laptop which displays system infected, data cannot be read and continues to loop to a screen saver which my kids put on it. How is this repaired or what do I need to buy to get rid of the virus programs so that I can use the laptop.

computer didn't allow me to access the start menu. I loaded free adware antivirus software on one computer and forced it onto that computer through an external floppy, but the software didn't kill the virus. I didn't have any important files stored on the computer so, I reinstalled the windows xp operating system from a disk that I had for another computer and that seems to have solved the problem. Thanks for your advice, I have had a good experience each time that I have used this site. Keep up the good wirk

Wizthis is what sounds like a trojan or for of spyware, probably disguised as a screen saver.
If you have no anti virus installed download this programme for free

If you have no anti spyware programme download this for free.
http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Pers...
on the laptop press Ctrl, Alt & delete or right click on task bar to get to the task manager and on the processes tab look for the scrensaver.exe or similair that is running, click on it and press end process.
this should allow you to work with windows
Install the programmes, then go to system restore tab in my computer>right click>properties>system restore tab and click 'turn off system restore'(this will stop any virus or spyware backups reinstalling).
Run both the programmes and remove any spyware or virus.
If it still appears you may have to uninstall it safe mode, which is press F8 key on start up and select 'start windows in safe mode' and run the antivirus and spyware programmes again.

forgot to mention when all is cleared of any nasties turn system restore back on.
