Question about Olympus WS-100 Digital Voice Recorder

4 Answers

It keeps telling me i only have 40 min of record time, where are the 27 hrs?

I have erased all the files and it still tells me 40 min remain when i want to record. i have not been able to record some key speeches. what should i do?My ws-100 tells me that there are only 40 seconds left, then stops and says full after those 40 seconds. I have reformated the recorder, still same problem. This happened after I down loaded some files onto my mac, as I have often done, then, I forgot to hit eject and just pulled the recorder from the mac usb port. I have done this numerous times without a problem, so I do not think that is it.

I did erase the files from the mac and it seems that the ws-100 doesn't know they were ereased and I cannot find a way to fix this.

Any ideas would be helpful.

The recorder works fine, so wish not to replace it. If I must get another one, any suggestion as to what recorder to get?

Olympus tells me to send in the recorder and they will see if they can fix it. This I will do since you have no other idea.

I am dissatisfied with your service in that I first posted in December and paid for 24 hour service. I got no reply until I reposted and complained, then you ask me to check with customer service at Olympus. That is ok, but not what I would call a tech solution. Please refund my $9.95.

    Thank you.

ps, I am glad to know that you exist and I will probably look in again someday if I have another problem.

If you look at your instruction manual at http://www.olympusamerica.com/files/WS100200Sman.pdf you can see the following - "1 Before you detach the recorder, turn the
POWER switch OFF and make sure that the display is turned off.
If you detach the recorder before the display is turned off, data may be damaged."

This is likely what happened and can only be fixed by reinstalling the software. But Olympus does not offer procedures for doing that. :( At any rate, most mp3 players today also allow voice recording and have ten or more times the memory that your recorder currently has. Sandisk e260 is a reasonably priced mp3 player that I use. Good luck to you.

Remaining recording time VERY short for no apparent reason

check how many different folders you have set up. just because you erase all in one folder, there can be other folders.
Find the manual reset for reformatting the recorder.

Olympus VN-480 digtial recorder - can't get my files to play back

if the power is interupted or improperly unplugged from the computer, the files may be corrupted... try to play the files and while playing move them to another folder... this may get your files back... else you will need to clear the recorder by pressing stop and erase at the same time for about 3 seconds.

Hold down the 'Menu/Folder' button until it flashes "menu". Then press fast-forward until you get to "FORMAT". Press play, then it will say 'no'. Press FF to get to 'yes' and press play again. You'll have to do that twice, because it will ask you if you are sure.
It worked for me...

Recording Time

I have one of these recorders, I actually have 4 or 5, since discontinued I believe, and one is stuck at 43 min remaining.

I think that problems start when you remove the battery while
the recorder is / was in the process of recording (or in play mode) I now press stop while recording before opening the battery case to switch a battery

Recorder says "PLEASE DOWNLOAD FILES," but there are no files to download

The DS-2 has a format option in the menu under submenu. After you choose start you will see a progress bar and it should return to full record time. Use on a MAC seems to cause the reduced record time more often than on a PC.
