If it's beeping continuously and has no display then it has NO memory installed. That's probably why they were going to throw it out.

Sounds like to me that either you're missing a bootable OS or its the harddrive. If it beeps, chances are the OS. You can buy a copy of Vista and have someone install that for you or you can do it yourself. But if you are nervous about such or dont know about computers, have someone else do it for you.

If BIOS doesn't recognize CD Rom or USB, I would try updating the BIOS first. It is available at the link below. You may want to update the other drivers as well.

Fans on Mac Intel Tower

I would suspect it needs a good internal cleaning. The accumulated dust will cause the computer to overheat. Disconnect all cables and take the unit to a place where you can clean it. Remove the side panel and then with a can of compressed air or an air compressor blow all dust out of the unit. Pay special attention to the heat sink on the processor. Make sure you clean the power supply fan. Be sure and not touch any internal components without first grounding yourself to the chassis. It is best to do this outside as the dust will fly everywhere. You should clean the inside at least once a year. Merry Christmas.

On trying to conect my son's tower to the internet, all I get is ''little or no connectivity'' what does this mean and how can I fix it?

This usually means you are to far away from your wireless router for the computers adapter to work. Things you can try:

reposition your router. Is there metal or concrete between it and the computer?

avoid having other 2.4 Ghz wireless items nearby. I have seen a X10 camera block a laptop from getting a connection.

replace the adapter on the tower with a usb type with a cord. This allows you to place the adapter in a better position to receive.

switch to a hardwired connection (cat5 cable) or change your wireless hardware to type N.

Id your motherboard also has onboard video, and you have a graphics card, make sure that you try both connections. Chances are if you are using a graphics card and your computer thinks your using onboard, then you will get the no signal or vise versa.

Hooking my emachine monitor with compac tower

Jordman85,
Make sure that you are connecting to the video output on your Compaq that is configured (such as a PCI video card versus the integrated Graphics on your MoBo) and when reconnecting monitors, make sure the machine is powered down before connecting or disconnecting.
Since you say that "the only thing that show up is the arrow button", I assume you are referring to your cursor, and if that is correct? You're PC would be attempting to boot to windows and there may be a hardware conflict that may be stalling it. There could also be corruption in the windows installation. But the monitor should be simple "Plug and Play".
More details about your Graphics Card and any recent hardware software changes/occurrences that have taken place would help.
Good luck.

Hooking up keyboard and mouse

... Well, first things first, are your keyboard and mouse USB or PS/2? Chances are if it's a really old computer it doesn't have any USB ports. You would then need either 2 USB to PS/2 adapter (typically small green and purple adapters) or PS/2 keyboard and mouse.

Hope this helps!

Moniter problems

Hi, have you used the same motherboard in the two towers? sounds to me like you may have a couple of faulty capacitors on the board. Open the case and study the capacitors closely [with a magnifying glass if need be] capacitors fail very often when heated. they are the round components that sit in sets of 5, 6, or more in a row on the board. if any are bulging from the top or bottom, then its time for a new board.
