HL-DT-ST DVD+RW GWA 4164B DOENSN'T WORK

Hey there,
I've been having problems with my HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GWA4164B.

First thing is first, here are some details.

I have a Dell Dimension XPS 400 with ALL latest updates from dell.
I have the latest driver for this device.
I have all the latest BIOS and Firmwire and EVERYTHING.
I'm Running XP Media Centre Edition 2004 SP3 32-Bit [United Kingdom]
There are no possible updates for me to install for it, unless i missed something.

What the actual problem is, is that My drive can READ dvd's and cd's perfectly.
the problem is i cant WRITE DVD's or CD's
When i instert a blank cd or dvd nothing happens is just says please insert a disk.

And yes i have tried over 20+ different disks of different makes, none work and all same error.

Please help!
Thanks,

Open explorer and go to 'My Computer'
right click the DVD/CD-ROM Drive
click on the tab labeled 'Recording' (usually on the far right)
click the option that is labeled 'Enable CD recodring on this drive'
...and POOF, magic happens...

Re-install CD/DVD burning program and try again make sure to select the recorder drive correctly on option box ( copy from and copy to ) copy to is the recorder drive so should be HL-DT-ST DVD+RW GWA 4164B . You should have 2 drives on your pc the top drive and the bottom drive , put the DVD recorder on the bottom and connect the cable to slave , the top drive connect to master cable and set the jumper slave for bottom drive and master for top drive.

HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GSA-H55N ATA Device doesn't work

That's most likely your upper/lower filters, or drivers acting up.
Try drivers first, as they are easier and faster to fix. Go to device manager under system properties, and uninstall the device and reinstall it.
If it doesn't work delete the upper and lower filters:
Press windows and R keys type in "regedit" and press enter

double click on "computer" on the new window that came up
double click on "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE"
double click on "SYSTEM"
double click on "CurrentControlSet"
double click on "Control"
double click on "Class"

I have a HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4040N drive in stalled in an emachine Laptop, the drive will read data, cds music and dvd movies, but can not burn either cds or dvd...Depending on which program i use for...

well there could be a few things you can try
1) update the firmware and see if it works any better
2) try brand name DVD-R disks and CD-R disks
3) try an updated hack firmware such as these http://tdb.rpc1.org/#GWA4040N
4) try Nero Lite. it is free and it supports almost any drive. http://www.nero.com/eng/downloads-nero9-free.php

I would not worry about the driver as they normmally would not need any.
