My LHD45ELY7 has run fine for several years. All of a sudden it is starting to freeze with no water collection.. Ice forms on the top coils. I'm afraid to run it.
Assuming this isn't just a weather change, it probably needs cleaning. The unit is supposed to run the fan without the compressor intermittently to give the cold coils a chance to warm up a bit so the little bit of ice that normally forms can melt off. But once they get dirty, this melting and runoff is impeded. Spray some formula 409 (or similar) on the coils and rinse thoroughly. It is also possible that the unit is not switching over to run the fan only (without the compressor). This could be due to a bad temperature sensor, or it may be dirty or corroded so it thiinks the coils are a bit warmer than they really are. If you can find this sensor (it's usually attached to the coils with a little spring clip) see if you can't clean up where it makes metal contact (thermal contact) witht the coil. Good luck.

clean filter and then check the coil behind the filter to see if clean. Biggest things that freeze a unit are dirty filter or coil...or low on freon.
SOURCE: Ice is forming on the top of the unit, it is
Ice will often form if the humidity level is high or the air intake filter needs cleaning. If it's because of high humidity or being used in a basement, the unit may appear to still be running, but it's usually just the fan and it's going thru a defrost cycle.
If you check the filter, be sure to turn the Master ON/OFF Switch OFF and unplug the unit. Remove the filter and clean if necessary. If you wash the filter, use warm water and dish washing liquid. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry completely, before reinstalling it. DO NOT run the dehumidifier without the filter installed.
Hope this helped you to troubleshoot and solve the problem. Please let me know. Thanks.
SOURCE: When the dehumidifier runs it forms ice on the top
The problem you described can be caused by 3 things:
1. The air intake filter is dirty or clogged and needs to be removed and cleaned.
2. The cooling coils are dirty and need to be cleaned. Turn the unit OFF & unplug it before attempting
to clean the coils with warm water and mild dish washing liquid. Then rinse and wipe dry. A light
coating of WD40 will help them stay clean.
3. The dehumidifier is being operated in a basement, where the air temperature at floor level is
below 65 degrees. When this happens dehumidifiers struggle at temps below 65 degrees F
unless it its a Low Temp model, designed for basement applications. Raising the unit up off
the floor onto a sturdy table or counter top, that can hold the weight of the unit, plus a full tank
of water, will generally resolve this problem.
I hope this helps you to troubleshoot & solve the problem. Thanks for choosing FixYa.
