Question about Intel DG31PR Motherboard

1 Answer

Have an Intel DG31PR motherboard w 4 gb of memory installed. Want to install a GeForce GTX 260 video board to not only run games but to run SETI when not in use. Seti says I have to have 256MB of video memory available to run it on the GeForce BUT when I look at my video settings all I can get is 224MB. I HAVE updated the intel graphics drivers and have set BIOS to recognize the maximum amount of memory. No luck. Any help would be approeciated.

    The instructions from SETI are:

    1) Check whether your computer has a CUDA-capable GPU
CUDA programs work on most newer NVIDIA GPUs. To find out if your GPU is compatible:

    • Identify the model name of your GPU. On Windows, right-click on your desktop, and select Properties / Settings / Advanced / Adapter. Note the Adapter Type and Memory Size.
    • Check NVIDIA's list of CUDA-enabled products. If your GPU is listed here and has at least 256MB of RAM, it's compatible.

I'm a little confused. The video settings you are talking about is the amount of system memory the ONBOARD Intel video chip can use. As you are intending fitting the GTX 260 that is irrelevant because the GeForce card has it's own memory on the video card itself and will no longer use system memory.

The question you need to answer is how much memory the GeForce GTX260 has. Most modern video cards have at least 256mb on them, so I can't see there being a problem.

Can i use a geforce 9500gt 1 gb on my dg31pr?

Yes, the GeForce 9500GT has a PCI-E 2.0 x16 interface which is backward compatible with the PCI-E 1.0 x16 slot in the Intel DG31PR. I just installed a GeForce 450GTS last week with the same PCI-E 2.0 x16 interface in a motherboard with PCI-E 1.0 x16 slot and it works fine. Benchmarks were excellent.

I am having an intel core 2 quad q8300 cpu and my board does not detects it. my mother board is intel dg31pr.it runs everything perfect but it does not show processor type in the BIOS & the column is...

First, your BIOS seems to have an error detecting the processor. Have you try updating the firmware for the motherboard? The manual should have plenty of information regarding BIOS update.

Second, ALL 32-bit OS will should you less memory than you have. Usually around 2GB to 3.5GB depending on your motherboard as well. If you upgrade to a 64-bit operating system, you should see all 4GB, if not, it will come close to 4GB. (GT240 with GDDR5 is a very decent card, of course, it's not the best since the more you pay, the better it gets. You can always get better cards, and you will also need to think about what games you will be playing. That card, no doubt, will run most of the FPS games perfectly fine.)

Thirdly, I believe that when it automatically comes back from standby, it is a software problem, not hardware problems. Windows XP, from my experience, isn't flawless. I have seen many problems like that. It can be a registry error, which is a pain. You can try repairing Windows XP you really need the Standby function.

The video card is a joke, strictly for office use. Get a GTS 250 , it's an very upgraded form of 9600GT. 8800GT is far too old and weak for newer games.
