Question about Office Equipment & Supplies
My Brother MFC-490CW is setup to be able to print wirelessly and is successfully connected to my wireless network. But when I try to print something on my laptop, which has the proper printer software installed, the printer shows up as 'offline.'
How do I get it to be 'online'? I followed the setup guide that came with the printer, and I'm fairly sure I didn't miss a step.
Hey Bud. I had the exact same issue with mine. I called around and no one had an educated answer. I remembered that my Uncle Lester works for the IP department for the city of Beaumont. I called his house and of course he was at work. Just for grins I asked his 8 year old daughter how to fix it. She simply said, "Just unplug the router and plug it back in.... What a ********...." Then she hung up... Neddless to say this seems to work for everything else too.... Good luck.

This problem occurs because when you initially connected wirelessly your printer, it was assigned an IP from your router. Once you turn your printer off that IP went back to the router to re-assign. However your printer driver is still looking for your printer on the original IP. Solution is to assign your printer a static IP based on its MAC address in your router (fixed host) so that your router reserves the same IP address for your printer everytime.

I have been battling this for one month and fixed it tonight. Worked great when I first set it up wireless and then I chose to unplug and move printer and it has shown "offline" since. I tried getting it going wireless and with direct network connection. I've been working on this for weeks.
Here's what finally worked for me
[Windows Vista 64Bit and McAfee Security Center and I want wireless printer]
0) Downloaded the "Quick Set-up PDF" from the website for the 490CW
1) Downloaded latest Brother MFL-ProSuite MFC-490CW software from Brother Website and left it sitting in a directory.
2) Uninstall existing Brother software.
3) Do a factory reset on the printer (and restart printer)
4) Use Quick Set-up PDF to configure wireless so it saw my SSID and I entered by WEP code. I could see the connection and signal bars on the printer LCD.
5) Before installing the Brother MFL-ProSuite MFC-490CW I removed a portable USB drive (per the quick set instructions) and suspended by McAfee Firewall for 30 minutes.
6) Installed the Brother Software and restarted the PC.
Result: All has been bliss and printer now shows in my task tray with a green halo around it.
What did I do that I did not do the first time?
- Removed the USB jump drive which probably wasn't there a month ago
- Suspended the firewall (which had not blocked the original install)
- r e a l l y followed the quick start instructions closely.
