Prompted to Format External Hard Drive

I just formatted my PC (Dell 2400) hard drive, and I have downloaded all drivers. When I try to open my Buffalo HD-HC500U2 external HD, I am prompted to format this. It is also registering as a Samsung HD501LJ. I do not want to loose everything on this drive and I am afraid I will if I format. Ant recommendations for work arounds would be greatly appreciated.

Do not Format external drive. You will lose everything on it. If you are using XP go to My Computer then right click on the external drive and click Explore. If the operating system can read the external hard drive you will see the files that you have stored on that hard drive. If those are the files that you put on the external then you know it's the correct hard drive. Once you know it's the Buffalo then make sure that your Dell has the ability to see external drives. Try restarting your Dell with the Buffalo connected.

Same thing happened with my Hitachi HDD. It was caused by Virus! Do you have Antivirus or Do you update the antivirus data base? I used Kaspersky Internet Security. You should remove the virus first from your System then you can connect your External Hdd again!

you will most likely have to format the drive to use it again, but you can recover everything that is on the drive with this program - File Scavenger

try the demo and do a long search for * in the drive, you should find all your files, you can restore them into your computers main drive and ones you have recovered all the important files.

go aheadn and format the usb drive and copy the recovered files back into the usb drive, note that if a file is overwirtten the contents may be incorrect so check the contents of the files after recovery.

Can i transfer information to a mac

If the external hard drive has been formatted on a PC in NTFS file format then the MAC cannot read data off this hard drive.
The FIX..
Connect the USB external hard drive to a Windows computer and copy your data off this hard drive to the computer.
Then format the external hard drive in FAT32 file format. (the MAC can read and write to data to and from a Windows PC)
Now copy the your data from the computer back onto the external hard drive.
Now you can connect the external hard drive to the MAC and download your data to the MAC.

500gb buffalo external hard drive not working in my win 7 computer. not able to format as there any way to format it.

click start control panel administrive tools ,computer management ,device manager look through all of your devices if you see a yellow question mark?or exclamation mark ! or red x
right click to reinstall drivers or
if you can see your usb but its not working
ports(com&lpt)right click update driver
just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again, sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable,
check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red-white-green-black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems

click start click on my computer you should see your drive
right click then select format
another way is to control panel administrive tools computer management disk management right click on your drive select format
hope this helps

1tb external hard drive wont appear in my computer

Have you "Formatted" it before you used it, If NOT, Right Click on drive and select "Format" format NTFS. After this you should be able to use the drive as normal. Also Right Click, MY Computer, choose "Manage" when it comes up select Disk Management, and you can initialise it and format there.

External Buffalo Hard Disk 500 Gb model no HD-PF500U2/BK-AP not detecting when connnected to a laptop or a desktop PC

Check the usb port function in the computer bios settings and be sure that it is set to yes. Connect properly your external drive. If it has two wire usb connections, use both to obtain the maximum power that will be need by your drive.

Hello! i got a problem with my external hard drive. My 4G flash is recognized but my 320G hard drive is not recognized in my desktop. I tried to plug the 320G hard drive in my laptop and it was recognized....

The external drive needs to be initialized from your PC. To do this, right click your My Computer and choose Manage. At the left panel click on the Disk Management. The list of available drives will show on the right.

Right click on the drive and select create partition (primary partition). After you've selected your partition , now you need to format the hard drive. Choose quick format. Right click again on the partition you've just created, now select "Format" and select NTFS. Click ok and it will guide you until it is finished.

If you need further assistance, just let me know.

Hi i got a buffalo tb external hardrive and the pc wont recognise it now after i transfered alot of data when the pc froze and i had to turn pc off mid transfer . please can you help

It is probable that since the transfer did not complete, the data on the external drive will be corrupt.

Uninstall the external drive then reinstall and format the ext drive.

You should then be able to begin the data transfer process again.

It just sounds like bad luck that your pc froze mid transfer.
When you try again, do not use the pc for any other uses until the transfer has completed.

Regards and let me know if this works for you.
