My print is also gray, but only when printing Excel documents. They printed fine with my HP printer.

Same for me on a pixma mp500, all documents are grey instead of black. A new inktcartridge doesn't help.

    Same Problem here!

  • rwobee Apr 07, 2009

This is MADDENING! I have some Word and now some Excel documents which always print in GREY instead of BLACK!!! I have tried everything. (Here are TWO workarounds: 1) despite using plain paper select "Photo Matte" paper and set quality to HIGH and you'll get black not grey; and 2) in the Print Dialogue select Print To (or Save As?) PDF and "print" it to a PDF document... then open that and print it... it's fine in black not grey.) I CANNOT FIGURE OUT WHAT I SET WRONG TO MAKE THESE DOCUMENTS PRINT IN GREY, NOT BLACK AND IT's DRIVING ME CRAZY!!! PLEASE PLEASE FIND AN ANSWER SOMEWHERE!

I wish someone would REALLY solve this, but I've found two (time-consuming!) workarounds:

1) Despite using plain paper, tell it you're using "Matte Photo Paper" (this is necessary in order to...) then set the print quality to the next-to-highest level (default is middle of five quality levels). The doc will print in black as it should, not grey.

2) Instead of the above, use the printer dialogue option to print to a PDF file; then open the pdf and print it. It will print in black, not grey!

WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY?????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is apparently only a problem on Macs. The workaround I found is to do a Print Preview (which, in fact, generates a pdf) and then print from the preview instead of directly from the original document. Slightly easier than saving to a pdf. Unfortunately, Acrobat Reader 9.0 also prints gray instead of black and won't allow the use of Preview :-(((

Why Canon MX310 won't scan error 114.0. how to fix

I have this copier too but only use it as a copier in my classroom. It's a stand alone. But can't print. There is no software to install on a computer so I don't know how to fix it if there's no software.

  • With the printer turned on,unplug it
  • Open the top and bring the ink cartridge holder to the middle
  • Raise the gray bar and remove the print head assembly with the cartridges in it
  • Lower the gray bar with the head missing and close the top with the head out
  • Restore the power, wait till the printer starts
  • It will tell you to put in the cartridges
  • Restore the print head, close the top and the printer should resume working

Print colour is wrong.

When you go to print, select printer properties and select black and white printing, not gray scale photo printing. If this doesn't help, try cleaning the black cartridge or replacing it. Hope this helps!

Black is printing gray

Has your printer defaulted to 'draft' printing? That's where grey printing seems to come from.

Hi! Is there a setting on the Canon Pixma MX310 printer that will darken the text I print from sources (e-mail, websites, etc.) that use gray or other colors in their default text? The header/footer info...

Not only that but there is a setting in the print properties on your computer that will be able to do this for you without messing with the printer each time because that could be a hassel. Just go to settings, cntl panel under printer click your printer with right mouse button click properties under color you can select dark or whatever you like in there, seek your owners manual and or the hp website www.canon.com under support you can download the manual.

Ran out of color ink on cnnon mx310 ... want to

If when you attempt to print only with the black cartridge installed but it won't print, then this specific printer requires that color ink also be installed. Typical with most inkjets.

Set to print black and white only

I am not sure on a MAC but on a PC you do this in the control panel under printers. you can select options to black and white just as you can change the paper size. your printer may call this setting gray scale. or you can go old school and jsus pull out the color cartridge. hope this helps

Can't print to mac wirelessly (could do it a few days ago)

I had the same problem until recently. You have to install the drivers FROM THE CD that came with the printer, instead of selecting the drivers from the default list. Then, when selecting which printer driver to use (you'll have two options) choose Canon IJ and NOT Canon MX310 series. This is a problem with their MX310 driver, which is solved using a default/generic Canon InkJet (hence, the IJ) driver. Hope this helps!
P.S. This only works on Mac OS X. I have yet to figure out how to print wirelessly through Vista. Will keep you posted.
