Question about Canon PIXMA iP4200 InkJet Photo Printer

1 Answer

I have a PIXMA ip4200. The problem is this. It will not print. The ink is full. There is plenty of paper in the auto feeder top (I never use the bottom feeder). The message states the copier is out of paper. I have the booklet and cannot find the source of the problem. I think it has something to do with where the paper source is. Please help. Thank you. Joan

same problem as Joanieshea's above...but mine seems to be making a funny sound when it's trying to "feed" the paper...wondering if i can dismantle it somehow and see if anything is caught in the paper feed area?

Have you tried pressing the button on the printer that changes the paper source? (I think it's the bottom one.)

Also your printer driver, printer queue, or whatever, might be trying to use the bottom tray. You should check the printer properties.

I assume you're using Windows; what version is it? (XP, Vista, 2000,...) Or else, what other operating system are you using?

There should be two buttons on the Left front of the printer. The bottom one selects the tray to use the paper from. If you push on it the light will change a light on that panel by the bottom button to indicate which tray is selected. The top button is to continue if you have a paper miss feed. You probably already know this. Normal 0 Could have a corrupt driver.
Disconnect the printer or at least be sure it is turned off. I'd do both and when the CD software program asks you to connect the printer to the USB port, do so and it should again work properly.
Hope this helps. Bud

How can i set it to load paper from the top

Go to Control Panel, then to your Printer. Right Click on it, then click on Printer Properties. Down at the bottom of the page, click on Preferences. Now select the type of paper ( on the top right-hand side), and then , below that, select Auto sheet Feeder. Job done.

The printer keeps telling me it's out of paper, which it isn't

1> Open the sheet feeder cover and pull out the paper support.

Set paper, aligning the right edge of the paper to the cover guide with the paper's print side facing up.

Pinch and slide the paper guide to the paper's left side.

Note: Make sure to set paper lengthwise. Setting Credit Card sized paper long-side down by mistake may cause a paper jam.

Pull down the paper output tray supporting with both hands.

Pull out the extension completely.

Ensure that the Power lamp and the Auto Sheet Feeder lamp light.

Note: If the Cassette lamp lights, press the Paper Feed switch to light the Auto Sheet Feeder lamp.
If the Auto Sheet Feeder lamp does not light even after pressing the Paper Feed switch, Paper Source in the printer driver may be set to the setting other than Paper Feed Switch.

I would try using something like rubber renew on the pickup rollers and make sure that the paper is being fed correctly. If this is happening then start looking at the ink.

Open the printer and remove the ink. Clean around the ink carriage and the under the ink with alcohol and a cotton swab. Pay special attention to areas with copper contacts. Some printers will let you re-run a cleaning utility from their system menu or the computer printer properties. Keep in mind too that some printers will not print correctly, even with full ink, if the exact type of ink it expects you to have is not installed. If all else fails change out the ink, but double check that the ink is correct against the manual or written instructions inside the printer. Not every cartridge that fits the printer necessarily is the right type and using the wrong ink can cause unexpected results.

Paper feeder not working

That printer has a feed switch which changes from the top feeder to the drawer below, the little light tells you whether to put paper in the top or bottom. either make sure both are loaded or switch to the one that has paper.

Pixma IP4200- not printing color

If it's a generic ink, try another one, if it's a Canon ink, make sure the tape on top is removed, it covers an air vent, if that doesn't help, you need a new printhead, QY6-0059-000 around $40.00

Won't print black when set for plain paper

Try removing all ink bins except black then you won't have any problems. You should also be able to go into your printer settings and select "Black and White" or "No Color" and it will print ok. Removing the ink trays is the easiest way though.
