Question about Craftsman Air Tools & Compressors

Craftsman 5 hp 30 Gal Won't build to more than 50/60 PSi

I have a Sears/ Devilbiss model #919.165300 5 HP , 30 Gal ,oilless air compressor that my wife bought me several years ago that has ran fine up until the last couple of weeks.
At that time it starting taking 30 min. to fill the tank to the set 120 psi, now it will only go to 50/60 PSI and it keeps running until I shut it off. It just keeps running, and running....
I have checked it over and can find no air leaks, I've cleaned ( it wasn't dirty ) the air filter, replaced the drain valve ( it needed it anyway as I had buggered it up once ) all conections are tight with teflon tape. A year ago I replaced the ( plastic ) regulator because of a leak.
As stated above, I have checked for leaks with a soap and water spray, but could find none that would account for this problem.
Any help would be great!!!
I thank you in advance, Pat

You were "spot on" ! I pulled it apart and one side of the ring is gone and the so called cylinder was trashed. I'll see if Sears has these parts, their web site says yes , but God only knows with them... Total should be less than $40.00.

I thank you for your help, as it really did help me.

Most oilless compressors suffer from a short lifespan of the cylinder and piston ring. Unplug the unit and remove the cover to expose the cylinder and rod. Move piston to topmost position and examine the condition of the cylinder. If you see scratches or worn areas close to the top of the cyl. then most likely will need rebuild kit. (Not expensive) If cylinder looks good, remove the head and check the reed valves for debris or broken reed. Reed valve plate is also available as part with gaskets. To extend the life of an oilless compressor try not to use it in dusty or sandy areas as the bottom of the unit is open and tends to **** dirt into cylinder. Good Luck.

Pressure in the tank only builds to 30 psi

Bad check valve. But I would check the regulator, by turning it down to about 10 PSI and running it and see if it builds again, if that works then it is the check valve. But from what you are saying I would replace the check valve anyways.

Low air pressure

This sounds like it is either the pump is leaking from the piston or more commonly, the rubber seal that seals the outlet tube to the cylinder head blew out like mine. Let me guess, it got a lot louder than it was originally? The seals are readily available from sears parts direct, its like 3 bucks but shipping is around $8. Hope this helped

Compressor won't build psi above 30,is this typical of the regulator or pump? the compressor is a 3 gal craftman about 1 yr old.

sounds like the regulator is faulty, normal running air should reach 110 psi, this will allow you to run tools...

This link will take you to sears web site, where parts are available. I have linked you to the parts list. If this does not take you there, go to www.sears.com and click on the parts direct tab and enter your model number.

Craftsman 30 Gal. 150 PSI Not building air over 45lbs

The compressor valve may have a faulty gasket or seal, and maybe leaking air internally. Or the compressor might be going downhill. You can try to replace the valve seal and see if that makes a difference, otherwise you need to replace the compressor.

Craftsman air compressor 1 HP 12 gal 125 psi

this is probably an "oilless" compressor, it has "piston" with a thin ring of leatherlike material acting as a piston ring, the "cylinder" is an aluminum sleeve - what usually happens is the cylinder gets scratched from dirt or just wear or the leather ring deteriorates, that's why it will go only so far - the only fix for this is to replace the cylinder and the piston

I have a craftman oiless air compressor model # 919153210 that I need parts for and sears do not carry the part anymore. thank you for any help., gcmac@netzero.net

Many of Sears oilfree compressors were made by Devilbiss. Try going to this address http://www.devilbissparts.com/ and enter your sears part numbers. (example cac-4281 for valve plate) They will most likely have the parts that you need. Good luck and email if you have other questions about your conpressor.
