Question about System Power Supplies

1 Answer

I have a 5 year old Dell Dimension 8300. Lately I have been having problems getting it to come on and stay on. Once running, it stays running great. Today it wont stay on. I hit the power and sometimes it does nothing, sometimes it will run the fans but no diag. lights, sometimes it flickers the lights and stops, sometimes the diag lights dim like they aren't getting enough power. I've been through the Dell online self-help guide. All fans are running. I've checked the connectors, reseated the components I could reseat. Help.

It is likely your power supply is failing. When you press your power button a signal goes through the motherboard to the power supply, then the PS comes on. I would try a replacement power supply first, you can get a used one for less than $20.

You need a power supply! Go to Amazon and search for one that is the same specs as yours. Fairly easy to replace, don't use your old one anymore, it could be dangerous.

My Dell 1525 has had ongoing problems in that it wont charge. Runs fine with the cable attached but no charging. Tried charger from another Dell with same problem. When looking in bios comes up with...

Try the battery from the other Dell system. If it charges fine, then its a problem with the battery, go for a replacement. Else, try updating the BIOS once from http://ftp.us.dell.com/bios/1525_A17.EXE. If it still doesn't charge the battery, then you may have to go for a motherboard replacement. If the system is under warranty then call Dell Tech Support @ 1-800-624-9896.

My dell dimension 4550 wont turn on i unhooked the power supply and jumped the pins to get my power suppy fan to come on but i dont know if its putting juice out

At the plugs check the yellow and black (black is ground) and the red and black. You should get 5v on one and 12v on the other. The fan needs to stay jumpered to check for voltage. At the main plug you should also find 3.3v

When the PC is turned on the light turns green for a second and then turns off. Nothing appears on tthe monitor. The monitor has an orange light steady

Since your green light comes on momentarily, you may have hope. Look in your manual or on Dell website to how to reset your BIOS chip to the default. You do this with the power off, unplugged. There is a 3 pin jumper which should now be in the normal mode. Moving the jumper to the clear mode for 30 sec. should bring the Bios to default. Should the monitor stay on, you will have to set the time and date and maybe a couple other tweeks. Good luck.

What is the 6 pin

You can replace the power supply in this Dell with a normal ATX power supply. Make sure the total wattage is equal to or greater than the old power supply.

Dell Dimension 4100 won't stay switched off

Well try this to check some settings.
1. Reboot computer and hit F2 to go to the BIOS settings.(you may have to keep pressing F2 until you see that it is going into setup)
2. Once in the BIOS you will have to use the arrow keys to move around and there is a key at the bottom. Move to the Power section and hit enter.
3. Check and make sure that the settings for Power up on PCI/PCIE Devices is off.
4. Check and make sure that Auto Power On is Disabled.
5. AC Recovery is off.
6. If all the settings are done, hit ESC to exit the menu.
7. Arrow key over to Exit.
8. Hit enter and comfirm save settings.
If all the settings are correct, then you are quite possibly correct in it being the power supply.

Hope this helps.

Dell Inspiron flashing amber power light, not charging

I would think the batteries need replacing. That happened to my Dell Latitude CPI. The batteries won't charge past about 3%, so I got new ones and that did the trick. If this is under a year old I would contact Dell about it, if it is under a year old they should replace the batteries.

Hope this helps.

Dell Dimension 8400 power supply

Hi,
It not a common problem. The problem that you are facing is is beacuse of faulty motherboard. The blinking amber is caused , becasue the motherboard is not able to distribute the power signal to the devices . You can follow the link below to trouleshoot the problem if you are comfortable in opening the computer chassis

Dell Dimension power problem

There are several different solutions for this as posted at this Forum.

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/51352-2-dell-dimension-8400-wont-boot

1) A lot of people have just removed the Jumper for the CMOS and turned the Power back on and back off and replaced the jumper and/or removed the battery.

2) Several people have reseated the Memory and after booting back up it worked.

3) A few had to replace the Mother Board and CPU but in this instance they had to also replace the Case because the Dell case wasn't really fit for the heat of from the CPU.

4) I had the exact same problem and luckily replacing the Power Supply fixed this for me. I had to cut out the back of the Dell case for the toggle on/off switch but when I tested the old Power Supply it was only getting 5amps and this was causing the Amber/Orange/Yellow light to constantly flash.

I hope this helps!
