Question about HP Compaq Presario V6000T Notebook

1 Answer

I just installed a D-Link DIR-655. My desktop is running just fine but my laptop won't connect wirelessly. Well it says I'm connected to the network but when I click on Internet Explorer it says, " Can not display the webpage." What am I doing wrong? The laptop is a Compaq Presario F500 with Vista Home Premium if that makes a difference.

Don't know exactly what you're talking about but here's what I did. I ran the ethernet cable from my desktop to port 1 on the D-Link then ran the other cable from the back of the modem to the internet port on the back of the router just like the directions said. My laptop says I'm connected to the network and the internet with an excellent signal. I tried getting on the internet using AOL 9.0 VR and it worked. I tried Internet Explorer again and I'm still getting that same message.(can not display the web page) So while logged on to AOL, I downloaded another browser.(Safari) Now Safari is giving me that message. Maybe it's something wrong with the browser settings.

Ok, AOL was the only program in the exception list. I added IE and Safari but they're both still saying the same thing. This is getting real frustrating. I'm about ready to chunk it out of the window.

I think what we're dealing with then is a Windows Firewall problem, for whatever reason its blocking Internet Explorer and Safari from the net. The globe is proof that even Vista can see internet on your connection. We need to allow those programs through your firewall.

Internet explorer and Safari are the ones we are looking for. Let me know if this helps. Unfortunately my vista machine is at home or else I could give you more precise instructions.

Why can't my Dell desktop computer pick up my wireless connection? It keeps telling me a cable is unpluged but the wireless service is working fine.

Most desktop computers, and especially office models, do not have integrated wireless networking like laptops do since they are not portable. They were designed for wired network cabling. If the desktop HAS wireless capability, there would need to be an expansion card installed and a wireless antenna protruding from the back, or it needs a wireless transmitter/receiver dongle plugged into a USB port. If it doesn't have either of these, it probably doesn't have wireless. However, wireless connectivity is as easy as getting a wireless USB dongle for about 35-40 USD.

Connect a LAN cable from the D-Link to your laptop/computer'sLAN port, open the browser on your laptop/computer and enter the D-Link'sconfiguration URL..
http://192.168.0.1
The default login = admin
The default PW = blank (just press Enter) You can now change the default password.
You can now configure the wireless settings. Now configure the wireless card in your computer/laptop withthe router's wireless settings.

Make sure your wireless switch is turned on. On most computers, there is an LED light that glows blue when the wireless device is turned on and enabled, and glows orange when off or disabled. Some newer models use a different color scheme, see the user guide for more information and the location of your switch.

If your switch is on and the light is blue, you may have a driver problem. Go into device manager and uninstall the drivers for the wireless card and re-install them. You should look on the HP web site for an up to date driver. You can connect ti the internet with this machine by plugging in a Cat5 ethernet cable between the port on your router and the port on the laptop. A blue or yellow cable should have come with the router.

Having your laptop sitting next to your desktop will not let your laptop connect to the DSL link.

You need what's called a Wireless Router. (assuming your laptop has a wireless adapter, if not you'll need a network cable for that.

1. Go to the store, buy a wireless router
2. install router in between your DSL modem and the computer.
3. Plug the WAN port into the DSL modem (cable is usually included with the router)
4. Plug the desktop into the back of one of the ports of the wireless router
5. Run the setup disk
6. For manual configuration of the router you can usually go to: 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1 depending on the brand)
7. If you don't know anything about networking, let the install disk do all the work.
8. Follow the instructions on what it tells you your configuration is for your wireless network.
9. Go to your laptop, apply said instructions.
10. ???
11. Profit.
