Question about PC Laptops

No Power On Laptop

Dell Insperion B120 several years old. Never used for internet, never ran well on battery alone, mostly used it with adaptor plug. Kept it dusted out, & defraged properly, now it won't power up--all black, no lights. I took it apart, dusted, removed dusted & replaced battery. When I put everything back, it powered up for a moment or two then back to all black. Could this be as simple as buying a new battery for it, if I do & it doesn't work do stores take them back? Please advise & thanks!!

If you are in the US, you can buy a digital multimeter for <$20 at auto parts stores, Radio Shack and others. If you are in the are where Harbor Freight stores are located, I have bought a few serviceable little meters for $3.
These aren't precision instruments but they are very nearly as good as those I have that cost far more.
They come with somewhat intelligible Chinglish instructions and with it, you can learn a couple of things about your problem.

If the charger is plugged into AC, you can check to see if any voltage is available at the computer end of the cable.
If it is rated at (for example) 12 volts, you could find anything from 13 to over 20 volts and this would mean the charger can do something.

Your battery pack could have 2 to 4 contacts on it on the end that plugs into the computer.
With the meter set to 20 volts DC, you can check between all of the connections, two at a time, and if (again, an example) it is rated at 12 VDC, you should see at least that amount and it could be 13-14 volts depending on the kind of cells it uses.

I would do this test after sadly watching the LEDs all fade away since this means the battery is pretty much exhausted.
A 12 volt pack removed after this will probably show several volts and climb while you watch it but that only means it is sick, sick, sick.
If you find no two points that show some kind of voltage, an internal thermal fuse may have blown and if you aren't a techie, you will probably need a new pack.

So for a few dollars, you can gain knowledge as to what it is you really need; a battery pack or a charger and you will find other uses for the meter at home.

Which ever way round you plugged in should not have resulted in what happened.
You should have a green light on the adaptors case when plugged into the mains weather it's plugged into the laptop or not, if not check the plug fuse.
Is it the correct adaptor for the Laptop? TO CHECK look at the underside of the adaptor the output voltage and amps should be the same as on the base of the Laptop.
Hold the power button down for longer than 5 seconds to ensure the Laptop is off.
Remove the battery and try with just the adaptor plugged in ONLY if its the same output voltage as the laptop.
Remove the memory stick and replace then try and boot again this can sometimes reset the computer.
Leave the adaptor plugged in with the Laptop off to try and put some power in the battery and then try with just the battery.
I have a feeling the adaptor is faulty and it was coincidental that the laptop switched off as you plugged it in, I think you just ran out of battery power.
If in doubt get an electrical shop to test the adaptors output.

Tip

Battery won?t charge and AC adaptor not recognized

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 that just turned two years old.

After one year, my dell 6-cell battery started to falter, so Ipurchased a new 9-cell battery. This worked fine until a couple ofmonths ago when I noticed that my 65W adaptor was frayed. I bought anew 65W Dell Inspiron 6000 ac adapter andit worked well for about a week until I noticed that my battery wasn’tcharging at times. If I was patient, or unplugged the adapter andplugged it back in, the battery began charging and all was saved.

This lasted only a short time until my Dell Inspiron 6000 batterywouldn’t charge at all for long periods of time, and sometimes thecomputer wouldn’t turn on, even if plugged into the wall. I thought itmight still be the adaptor, so I borrowed a fully functioning 90W Delladapter from a family member to test the system. This worked better, but still not great.

When I removed the battery and started only fromAC power, the functionality was also intermittent. Usually, if thecomputer actually started, I received the start-up error “The Inspiron 6000 AC AdapterType could not be determined, etc. etc. etc.” After pressing F1, thecomputer booted, but if the battery wasn’t in, the computer didn’tusually last long before shutting off. Unsure if maybe the battery wasthe problem, I put the 6-cell Inspiron 6000 batteryback in, and it too wouldn’t charge, although (together with the 90Wadapter) my computer would at least start more consistently if pluggedin. The error remained however, and sometimes the system stopsrecognizing power and switches to my ever dwindling battery power untilthe adapter is recognized again.

The problem is with the jack on the motherboard inside our Inspiron 6000’s. This is the jack you plug your power plug into on the back of the laptop.

Somehow the jack gets worn and does not make correct contact withthe laptop so the Laptop does not see the power supply as a legit Dellbrand. So the powersupply will not charge the laptop battery and run the laptop at the same time.

Modern laptops are all sold with built-in wireless laptop ac adapter. Some power notebooks used by corporate road warriors will have powerfulcellular adapters that connect the laptop to the Internet via the cellphone infrastructure

A bad connection between DC-IN power jack on the system board and the system board is a very common problem with dell pa 12,dell e1505 and Dell Inspiron 6000notebooks. If your laptop is out of warranty, then you can fix theproblem by resoldering DC-IN jack on the system board. If it’s stillunder warranty, it would be fixed at no charge to you. Problem symptoms:

  • Laptop randomly shuts down without any warning.
  • Power LED and battery charge LED start flickering when you wigglethe power cord or the AC adapter tip on the back or your laptop.
  • The battery will not get charged.
  • When you plug ac adapter for laptop, the laptop appears to be dead and there is no LED * activity at all (DC-IN jack on the system board is broken).
To fix the problem, you have to take your laptop apart, remove the system board to resoleder or replace the DC-IN jack. dell pa 12 and Dell Inspiron 6000 disassembly guides will help you to remove the system board. Take a closer look at the power jack on the system laptop board witha magnifying glass. In most cases you get the power problem because ofa bad connection between the DC jack and the system board, you’ll see acrack between the DC jack connector and the system board.

My dell ispiron b120 turn on but when I but the battery the power goes from the power supply striaght to the battery and the battery won't charge. Any one knows how I can get the battery to charge?

It could be and issue with the Battery if the Battery is too old. Please remove the Battery from the system and check if the system works fine using only the adaptor. Also press the button located on the Battery and check for the LEDs on the Battery. If all lights blink, then the Battery is fine. Otherwise, it needs to be replaced.

Problem with b130 batteries?

it is very possible that your a/c adaptor/charger is not working well enough to charge or keep you computer runing.
with a new battery you should put it on charge for several hour and charge it to the maximum.
do you know for a fact that the battery is new you put in it?
if the battery is used it may be trash also.
sort out the facts then look for the most obvious.
most obvious at this point it that a/c charger.

A couple of things to try: Take out the battery and try to turn on the laptop while it is plugged in with out the battery.
Unplug the laptop and try to turn it on with just the battery.
Leave the laptop plugged in for a bit and then try to start it up.
Are any of the lights on the laptop on?  Also, the battery should have a status light on it as well.  Check what that says.

Laptop won't turn on

The blinking orange battery light generally indicates that the battery isn't working properly, usually going out and not charging properly. In this case, since the adapter will not power the machine without the battery, and it should, I'm going to say that the adapter is going out and not getting the proper amount of power to the system. Try replacing the adapter. Be sure to replace it with a Dell replacement, the Targus brand universal adapters do not work well with Dell machines, and in most cases won't work at all.
