Grinding Noise My LCD TV made a loud popping noise last night. Now there is a medium "grinding" noise (sounds like a grinding wheel) and the TV does not turn on.

I was *hoping* it was something easily replaced like the cooling fan. The posted solution gave me the guts to actually take the back off my TV and check. Unfortunately, it is not the fan :(. The sound was actually a "sparking" coming from the front center when the screen was trying to come on. I believe the "do it myself" solution is out of the window. Does anyone have any idea what a repair might cost me?

I have Samsung DLP TV 50 inch HL-P5063W

First thing to look at is the color wheel this model uses--usually it will make a high pitched fan like sound but can make a grinding sound also.

If it slows down from the 12,000 or so RPM speed it will cause color issues.

HAVE GRINDING OR HIGH PITCHED SOUND?

Drum brakes causing intermittent grinding noise

Sounds like one of the springs that hold the rear brakes in place broke. Jack her up, pop off the tire, remove the drum and take a look. If you need to see what a good one looks like, look on the other side.

This is not a very common problem, but I saw it last year on a 69 chevelle.

Good Luck and thanks for using FixYa!!

C V Joints can make a lot of noises. Sounds to me like you either bent the inner fender or if it is plastic you may have pulled it loose and it looks normal but it is just sitting in place with the push pins out of their intended holes. When you turn and or hit a high speed it hits the wheel/tire. Try putting on some gloves and then pulling medium strength on the fender well and surrounding areas to see if that is the problem -

RCA HD50LPW164 turned on TV made a pop

the loud pop you heard was probably a capacitor blowing its top. The grinding noise is likely high voltage arching that was occuring due to rising voltage since capacitor isn't there to smooth it out.

Grinding/Low Whining noise when turning

sounds like the power sterring pump check valve is failing because it only when you turn, try to turn the wheels standing still to verify the noise, if noise present, replace the ps pump.

Try damper part number W10167268 from Whirlpool. They re-engineered the part, it's works different. Whirlpool issued a bulletin to servicers, but won't cover it under warranty (I have tried for many customers) "A bulletin is NOT a recall"

Samsung DLP HDTV wide screen

Sounds like the colorwheel (used in DLP projection sets with a single DLP panel) is going bad, either the wheel itself or the bearings on the motor driving the wheel are starting to fail. I would recommend getting a professional to service the TV set.
