Phillips DVD Player DVP5990-Sound starts ok-but starts warping

I have a Phillips DVD Player DVP5990. When I play a DVD, everything is fine for the first few minutes (approx 10 minutes), but then the audio starts to sound garbled/warped. Video remains ok. I stop DVD and turn off player, hoping that will help, but it doesn't work.

I had the same issue with a previous Phillips DVD player (different model). I contacted Phillips, who sent me a replacement player, but I'm having the same issue.

When I hooked up the Phillips DVP5990, I made sure to use the cords they provided.

I have Dish Network Satellite TV on the same TV. The TV itself is an old Panasonic TV/VHS combo.

I appreciate any assistance you can provide. Thanks!

Hello peg_chica307

Sounds like another bad DVD player. They seem to be having a lot of problems with some of their players doing this. Not much you can do, but replace it. Maybe they will send you a new one, otherwise I would return it and switch to a different brand.

let me know if you have any more questions

Since you have had this problem with more than one dvd player I suspect the issue is with your TV. It is possible the amplifier circuitry is malfunctioning. Try hooking up the dvd player to another TV and see if it plays okay there. If it does, you know your TV has a problem. If the sound is still not right you probably will need to have the dvd player replaced or repaired again.

My phillips dvd player (model DVP5990) is not reading disc at all no matter the format. any ideas?

This could be several problems. You should first try to clean the laser head with a cleaning disc. If this does not work you can try resetting the dvd player to the factory settings. This function is found in the settings section under preferences. Use you remote control to open the settings menu and use the up and down arrows to highlight the preferences section. Press ok to enter the sub-menu. Use the up and down arrows to highlight the default setting.Press ok. You have now reset the dvd player to the factory settings. Press the menu button again to escape the menu. All this information is in the owners manual on page (47). Try a dvd to see if the dvd player is working properly. If not you may have other problems that will require you to open the dvd player up to find the problem. These problems could be a laser lens that is not functioning properly or a problem with the transport that is use to set the dvd up for reading by the laser lens. For these problems it is best to have a qualified technician to troubleshoot the problem. You can call phillips customer support at this telephone number 1-800-744-5477. Tell them the model number of your dvd player and the problem you are having with disc player not reading discs. They will be able to help you get service for the dvd player.I hope this information helps you with your problem.

How to make DVP5990/37 Region Free

First I recommend that you upgrade the factory firmware to the latest version. The current version is .31 and available here. Click "I accept" to accept the license agreement and start the download. Open the zip file and burn the file named DVP5990_37.bin to a CD. Put the CD in the DVD player and it will begin the upgrade and open the DVD tray. Remove the CD but leave the DVD tray in the open position. After just under 10 minutes (6-8) the DVD player will report that the update was successful and close the DVD tray. Press the setup button, go to preferences scroll down the choices (past the bottom of the screen) and select reset to default values. The player will reboot.

Next press Setup
select the Preference menu
Press 1,3,8,9,3,1 on the remote control.
Use the up/down arrows to select region "0" which means all regions.

If you ever get a disc that won't play correctly due to a region error, just use the code above to select the correct region for the disc and you will still be able to play it.
