Hi, try this:
Reset the whole machine by doing the following (this will not erase your HDD by the way):
1. Turn off at wall for 5 minutes
2. Turn back on at wall WHILE holding the standby/on button on the front until the front panel display goes black.  The recorder should then be left for a few minutes and then turn it on on remote, when the machine should prompt for language, time and date and work normally again!

Hi, upon checking I just realised that the DVDR520H is actually a rebranded LiteOn model (and I was mistakenly giving you advice for Philips-made machines).  In the case of this exact model which I have repaired on many occasions, I'm afraid that (like all LiteOn DVD recorders) it has failed!  Many customers came into my shop with this fault (the audio circuits seem to overheat or just simply burn out due to poor workmanship).

    I suggest:

    1. Dub all your HDD content onto DVDs to save it

    2. Trash the machine

    3. Buy either a Samsung DVD/HDD recorder (very solid reliable) or a Pioneer (not easy to use but very good) or one of the latest Panasonic models.

If the TV source is separate from the recorder, there has to be a physical connection between the two. From your description it seems there is a video connection, but what about audio?

No sound through channels on hdd dvd

If you are taking output from the Red, Green Blue connectors (Component) from your video source and plugging them into your hd dvd recorder, you need a sound channel as well. The S-video carries both audio & video but not in high-definition. Sounds like you've got the 3 channels for your video (RGB-component) connection now you need an audio signal into your HD DVD recorder. That will be 1 fibre connection or 2 cables. Let me know if you get it working & good luck!

Make sure you are not using DVD+R dics - the player won't play these. It is OK with DVD-R.
