Inherited 2 switches 3com 4228g (3c17403) password problem

I inherited 2 switches 3com 4228g (3c17403) for use in the local school. The problem is that the switch has not been set back to the default settings. I connot log on with any use, I cannot set the ip address, etc... The switch is unusable.
Can you give me a hint how to set the switch back to the factory defaults?

Got a null-modem cable and made first a reset of the admin password (found that on the internet): login: recover, password: recover + power off/on within 30 seconds. This enabled me to set a temporary password for the admin account.

After that I could acces all settings of the switches. Set it back to factory default and off I went!

Thank you very much for your aid!

I haven't worked with these switches but generally settings such as ip address and factory defaults can be set through the Console Interface (CLI). You will need a null-modem cable to access this and a terminal client (Windows Hyperterminal works).

Hope that helps

How reset 3com 4228g switch

If I remember correctly, there is a tiny hole at the back or on the side. Press a paper clip into it. The switch should do a full reset and then reboot. If its just locked up, I would switch off at the power for 15 mins and try let it do an auto restart itself. Do this before you go doing a full button press reset as you may lose any or all updates the switch has had loaded into it.

I am looking for 3com 4228g default ip address

It depends what device on your local network it is
It may be 192.168.1.1
or 192.168.100.1

You may have to do a network scan and locate its exact network IP

Default password is incorrect or reset doesn't work

The default ip is 192.168.1.1
default user-name and password for the 5 models of 3com are as follows.:

1.
3com default ip: 192.168.1.1
username: n/a
password: admin
or
2.
3com default ip: 192.168.1.1
user-name: adminttd
password: adminttd
or
3
3com default ip 192.168.1.1
user-name: admin
password: n/a
or
4
3com default ip 192.168.1.1
user-name: n/a
password: PASSWORD
OR
5
3com default ip 192.168.1.1
user-name: root
password: !root

ok try
this
Note that at time you will need to set your local ip of your pc from which you are acess the device to the same range...
That is for example 192.168.1.10

Good luck

I do not have the password for 10 3CNJ220s I have inherited. Would like to know if there is a way to either "crack" the units or reset them to the original configuration.

the defautl password was "password" on these devices, 3Com no longer sells them but their support site has the software and manuals free to download. Downlaod the Utility software and restore the facotry defaults and simply start over. Good Luck.

3Com 3c17304 port 25 up not connecting

Well I think the port is bad, I had one that did something similar to your problem. I got on the 3Com website and submitted and RMA request and they upgraded my with the newest model. But if yours is still in stock they will replace with the same type. That is what I would do. Hope this helps ya.
