Question about Dell DJ Ditty MP3 Player

6 Answers

Dell DJ Ditty is "dead"

I bought a purportedly "new" Ditty which was supposed to be loaded with the version A04 firmware -- it was not, it contained A03. I tried using the Dell download of the A04 upgrade but (1) it took forever to run, and (2) it transformed the Ditty into a "Player Recovery Device Class (STMP3500)" ,i.e., the Ditty is now useless as an MP3 player (or anything else, for that matter). How can I restore the Ditty to an operational state? The firmware upgrade route doesn't seem to work. My computer is a Dell Dimension 2400 running Microsoft XP Home Edition, Service Pack 3.

I did reset the Ditty but the A04 download from Dell still fails to refresh the Ditty. The Ditty continues to be recognized by my computer as a "Player Recovery Device Class" -- whatever that is.

    Charcois,

I've done everything except remove the battery from the Ditty. The Dell firmware upgrade (Version A04) just does not work. The upgrade process takes hours to complete and leaves the Ditty totally "dead." The screen of the Ditty is "active" while the upgrade is in progress, but when the Ditty is unplugged from my computer it becomes completely unresponsive. And, as I mentioned before, the Ditty is now recognized as a "Player Recovery Device Class (STMP 3500)" -- the firmware "upgrade" effectively gave the Ditty a lobotomy. Any suggestions are welcome.

I was in the same boat with my Dell DJ Ditty. I ran the firmware update app. All it did was to blow out the functionality of the mp3 player. I was able to get it to work after downgrading my system to Windows XP on a spare computer. I ran the firmware update, Dell DJ Ditty started working again.

If you have DJ Explorer installed, uninstall it. The DJ should then be "seen" in Windows and you can remove any media you have stored on it. However, changing back to any firmware will reformat the DJ, though you should then be able to go back to the old firmware if you desire. Hope this helps and good luck!

In the process I outlined you should be able to format it and reinstall the firmware. Your problem was caused by an incorrect firmware update (basically its telling your mp3 player that its player recovery device)

You don't have a lot of choices, here is what I would do:

download the file again here

close every program you can , disable any antispyware/antivirus software before attempting the flash upgrade. Hopefully this time it will take correctly. the firmware is over a year old so this should work.

Files on Dj Ditty won't show up on computer..

Sounds like you need to reformat the player, but here is my Dell Ditty troubleshooter:

Dell DJ Ditty

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/P97347/om/OM.pdf - manual

http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=dce_djmusic&thread.id=47830 – How to Troubleshoot the Dell DJ Ditty – from Dell

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&ServiceTag=&SystemID=PDA_MP3_DJ_DITTY&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid= - Firmware for Ditty

Did you run the installation CD first? If you don't, Windows will load its own, possibly wrong, drivers.

Make sure you didn't accidentally press the player's lock button:
The keys on the Dell DJ Ditty have been locked.
Unlock the keys by pressing in on and holding the
Volume/Scroll/Select dial until the lock icon disappears.

Reset method - Insert the end of a thin object, such as a straightened paper clip, into the reset button (near the headphone jack).

Also make sure your operating system is Windows XP - it won't work on anything before or after.

The Musicmatch service that this player was tied to was discontinued in October 2007, so you’re going to have problems even if we get it working again.

The DJ Ditty does recognize DRM-encryption for WMA files – make sure the license is up to date, or convert the file to mp3 format if you are experiencing licensing issues.

If you are experiencing frequent freezing, or a file system/corruption error, or getting the “Warning! Reformat with Firmware Updater!” message, there are two ways to format the DJ Ditty:

Format using Windows Media Player:
Run Microsoft Windows Media Player.
Connect the DJ Ditty to the computer.
Click the Sync button on the top of the menu.
Click the "Format storage media" button on the right-hand side of the screen.
Disconnect the DJ Ditty and power it back on.

Reload or upgrade the Firmware:
Connect the DJ Ditty to the computer.
Download and install the latest firmware from http://support.dell.com
Run the firmware upgrade program with the "Format Data Area" checked.
Disconnect the DJ Ditty and power it back on.

We may be in luck - I actually found an owner's manual for this one. Did you run the installation CD first? If you don't, Windows will load it's own, possibly wrong, drivers.

Make sure you didn't accidentally press the player's lock button:
The keys on the Dell DJ Ditty have been locked.
Unlock the keys by pressing in on and holding the

Also make sure your operating system is Windows XP - it won't work on anything before or after.

The Musicmatch service that this player was tied to was discontinued in October 2007, so your going to have problems even if we get it working again. Use Windows Media Player 10 instead (downgrade if you have the current version 11 installed).

Let me know how everything turns out.
