I inherited a riding lawn mower, Craftsman DLT300 w BriggsStr 18.5 HP OHV. I have never worked on anything mechanical in my life, but my 8 yr old son has a desire for it. So I got this as our project to...

Here's how I would start.
Open the thing up as much as you can.
Get rags & cardboard and clean up the oil, esp. on the engine.
See how to put oil into the engine, add and check the level.
Start the engine and watch. See what the problem is first.
There are parts available at Sears, online, etc.
The repair itself could be somewhat simple and possibly too hard to do, but the first step is to "see" what is the problem.
I have a motor that needs a low oil switch, but it involves opening two halves of the engine, I don't want to do that myself.

Gave my 10 year old son a 20" huffy axis this past Wednesday for an early Christmas present. The pedal fell off Friday! How do I put it back on? The pedal, as well as the thing that screws into the...

Your pedal falling off is never a good thing, nor is the entire crank arm assembly.

For this one you are best taking it into your local bike shop and have them take a look at why both of these fell off. There are a number of reasons, from stripped thread to missing bolts and nuts to improper assembly. None of these are a good scenario with a childs bike, or any bike for that matter.

Alternative, and my personal suggestion - Take the bike back to where it was purchased and exchange for a new one. These parts should not fall off after years of riding let alone 2 days, and would constitute a warranty and safety issue.

I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND CONTINUING TO RIDE THIS BIKE, SINCE YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT ELSE WAS IMPROPERLY ASSEMBLED.

On the clutch and brake peddle the clutch engadges at the very end of the peddle. The brake is working fine but as you let the peddle out on the last 1/16 of an inch the drive engades. this makes it where...

If you replaced the belt then you know there is a tensioner/guide pulley and another pulley which goes in and out with the clutch pedal movement to take slack out of the belt. I would closely examine both of those as well as the linkage and return spring on the clutch pedal.

Can not get parts for my 1995 Sears Craftsman Tractor model number 917.254860 ? Sears only carrys a certain kind of part what I need they do not carry .

Go to a small engine repair shop for your part.
Sears tractors are just other tractors (Mostly Murray brand )with the sears name on them......as are most others.
There are only 2 or 3 manufacturers making all the tractors.
Your part should be easily ordered there with your model and serial #.

You will need a pedal wrench or a fairly thin open end wrench. Pedals are threaded or a good pedal wrench. The left pedal on bicycles unthreads in a clockwise direction and the right pedal unthreads in a counterclockwise direction. The thread back in oppositely. Theoretically they self tighten as you pedal. When buying the new pedals, make sure you take an old one with you to make sure that the threaded shaft is going to be the correct diameter. Any fairly wide pedal with rubber grips would be a good choice. A past customer even used two blocks of wood screwed together through the old pedals as they were too tight to remove. Hope this helps and wish your Dad well.

Engine starts, but stalls when clutch is released.

The is a safety switch located underneath the mower, in the dashboard area. This switch will not pass voltage to the ignition system unless the pedal is depressed, or the deck is not all the way up. However, your culprit is most likely the pto (power take off) switch on the dash that engages the blades. It will not allow the mower to start, if pulled, and if faulty will shut off ignition power when you release the pedal. First. You'll need a volunteer to sit on the mower and operate the controls.  Now put the deck down and with the pedal depressed start the engine. Nothing should happen, if it does replace the deck switch Sears part number #176138 mentioned above. Now raise the deck and release the pedal. Again, nothing should happen. Same solution if it does. If nothing happens on both tests the switch is ok. NOW. Behind the dash, find the pto switch, and squeeze the sides, depressing two clips that hold it in the dash. You should now be able to slide it though the dash, wiring attached. Unplug the switch. With pedal depressed, deck up, someone sitting on the seat, start the mower. Now release the pedal (making sure to block the wheels and have the transmission handle is in the neutral position. If the engine continues to run, you found the problem. Replace the PTO switch. Sears part number # 174651. Also, check the plug to the pto, ignition and deck switches for corrosion as this is a common problem, though not likely to cause yours, it could. Good luck, and please let us know the outcome, good or bad. Thanks so much.
