Question about HP Pavilion dv6000z Notebook
Configuration: WinXP SP3 & IE7
Recently re-formatted HD and reinstalled WinXP from scratch. All working alright apart from the DVD player. I can still play DVD movies and audio CD songs without any problem like before. However, I have problem running software CDs and some audio CDs. I cannot run installation CDs anymore. Is this the indication of the DVD Drive problem or registry problem. This is the internal DVD drive. Please help.
I concur with dekinstoke. Sorry.

It sounds like a hardware fault on the drive itself. The laser and focussing mechanisms are different for CDs and DVDs. The fact that the drive can read DVDs fine suggests that the laser and lenses can no longer focus correctly to deal with CDs.
Replacement of the drive would be the only fix, although you might find it a lot easier to buy an external USB DVD drive.

I am stumpted. I am not sure. normally if a drive cannot read a disk and all of the software and drivers are correct then I would say that the drive head is out of alignment . Pasify me if you will and restore you computer to the time before you stared havign the problem just to insure that it is not software. If it reads DVD's it shoud also read cd's.?
