HP Pavillion dv6121tx 15.4" notebook problem with DVD

Configuration: WinXP SP3 & IE7
Recently re-formatted HD and reinstalled WinXP from scratch. All working alright apart from the DVD player. I can still play DVD movies and audio CD songs without any problem like before. However, I have problem running software CDs and some audio CDs. I cannot run installation CDs anymore. Is this the indication of the DVD Drive problem or registry problem. This is the internal DVD drive. Please help.

    To GregL and Dekinstoke,

No error messages. The drive tried to read the CD (by making the crackling noises) and after a while it just stops. On the Window Explorer right hand screen - nothing appeared, just blank. I tried to run one installation CD for a number of times and out of 10 times, the drive managed to read 1-2 times. It reads some CDs but not all but so much all DVDs are readable.

However, when I "unchecked" the following and click the drive (i.e. E Drive or the DVD drive) in window explorer, immediately the error message "E:\ is not accessible the request could not be performed because of an I/O device error"

Right click DVD drive i.e. E Drive -> properties -> recording -> Enable CD recording on this drive

I tried to "clean" the laser len/eye using the CD cleaning disc which I purchased from the PC store but not successful because basically the drive cannot read the cleaning CD unless I can find a cleaning disc in DVD format.

If replacement of the drive the only solution?

    Thanks.

    ptiew

Hi

It sounds like a hardware fault on the drive itself. The laser and focussing mechanisms are different for CDs and DVDs. The fact that the drive can read DVDs fine suggests that the laser and lenses can no longer focus correctly to deal with CDs.

Replacement of the drive would be the only fix, although you might find it a lot easier to buy an external USB DVD drive.

How to change your winxp sp2 to sp3

there is some games you can't play in winxp sp2, like gta IV online.
you have to reinstall or format your computer just to turn your operating system in winxp sp3, just to play this game. do'nt waste your time to format or reinstall your hard drive just follow this quick step

Step 1: Run Regedit by Clicking on Start -> Run , type in regedit and press enter
Step 2: Make a backup of your registry (just in case)
Step 3: Browse to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlWindows"
Step 4: Modify the value of "CSDVersion" from "0x00000200" (SP2) to the Windows XP SP3 value of "0x00000300"
Step 5: Close registry editor
Step 6: Reboot
Step 7: Start GTA and freakin enjoy it already!

You can get a drive enclosure for the SATA drive that is in the PC, and copy your files to the new PC via USB. You can get them for about $15, and it will take no more than a half hour to install. Then, after you get your files off the old drive, you can format the drive, and use it as a portable external drive that would come in handy for doing backups. Everyone should keep at least two copies of their precious files.

MX6426* - WINXP ME w/sp3 - F11 loop

hi, ipresume u have hooked it up to another PC using a external S-ATA-USB- case, so that the PC recognizes your drive as one of his, but u are unable to boot from it,as it is handled like a thumbdrive.
can u access the data on the disk?
if yes, make a safecopy of everything personal,
you may even try to make a back-up using the
win-back-up function, just to have a complete copy of the harddisk...,
then format drive(blank it) and put back into laptop. Now setup a new clean copy of WINXP
and yes, you may have to reinstall all the drivers+progs+private data as well...

I hope this option works for you.

HP Compac NX5000 wont load XP Home on new hard drive

This situation leads me to believe that the CD or DVD drive is faulty,,or the install disc you are using is scratched or dirty.
Try cleaning the disc and begin again.
Another option is to take the hard drive out and using a 2.5 to 3.5 inch HD adapter ,,plug into a desktop PC as a slave.
And copy your WinXp cd onto a partition on your laptop HD.
Then using a Win98Se floppy boot disc you can access the winXP and install from there.
