Windows 98 uses the FAT 32 file system and will only read up to 127GB. You could format the drive and divide it into smaller sections and windows should be able to read it fine. Either 2 sections of 80GB each, or multiple smaller sections.
-Download and use the updated FDISK.EXE utility program from Microsoft.
-Keep your partiton size for the Primary partiton that is to be used for drive C: to 127GB or less.
-Use the Windows 98 FORMAT.COM utility program. Note that while the prgram is running it will display an incorrect size for your partition. After it has finished, the summary screen will show the correct size that was formatted.
Formatting large hard drives is extremely slow. If you have a disk setup utility that came with your new hard drive, use it instead of FORMAT.COM. This can save you HOURS of waiting.

DO NOT NAME YOUR EXTERNAL DRIVES THE SAME AS ANY OF THE INTERNAL DRIVES ON YOUR SYSTEM. Your internal drive will be C:, floppy A: and any cdrom or cdrw will be D:, E:, etc.. Go to My computer and check your drive letters before you begin. You may need to rename the drive letters.

Windows7 wont read wd1600 caviar as a external drive ???

Did you install the western digital drive softare? There should have been a disk with the drive, which you run when you have installed the drive. It tells the computer there is a new hdd in town. If you don't have the disk, google Western Digital, find their website, and search for HDD driver software, with the model number of your drive. You should be able to download the drivers to your computer, and install them that way.

do you use windows 98? because win 98 cannot support wd 160.
2) the mother board bios may not support this drive, or the interphase of the ext usb drive is faulty. lastly try to remove the raw drive from the casing and use it directly with the pc . i feel it will start working well

When installed in Vista it shows up with only 34 GB

Is this a new Hard Drive ?
Was it previously used with some other OS ?

If it was used with some other OS previously than run a debug on the HDD from DOS Prompt by using a DOS Bootable CD / DVD. Than try installing Vista.
