Toshiba 42H81 - Screen flicker

I have a Toshiba 42H81 rear projection TV that flickers. It started intermittently and would go away after warming up. It gradually took longer and longer to warm up and go away. Now it flickers constantly w/ some vertical flashing lines that show up on the right hand side. There is also a blurry section towards the top of the screen stretching horizontally all the way across. These all seem to happen all the time now. It does get better after warming up but it still flickering enough that it really is annoying to watch any more.

It'd be great if there was something to be able to fix on my own. Money is tight these days and I can't really afford a high repair bill or to buy a new one.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

    Dan,

I just saw some other posts discussing flickering issues and referencing the Hyper Module. Is that a problem too?

    Thanks,

Since the problem initially would correct itself, it suggests a poor connection somewhere that "heat" would resolve. If you can solder, try resoldering any joints that appear to be grainy or have rings. Please note that these sets will retain high voltages that can be dangerous even when unplugged. If the resoldering fails to resolve the problem, let us know and we'll look further.

Thanks,
Dan

It can be, but I usually like to look at the "cheap" solutions first. Most of the problems that involve hte Hyper module do not correct themselves like yours did.

When turned on, the screen has waves in it across the top and flickers. It is unreadable. When the TV warms up it seems to be better but is starting to flicker or flash all the time now.

Hi,
Your Toshiba TV has hyperboard inside and there are few electrolytic capacitors (may be 10) that need to be replaced.
If you are comfortable with soldering parts in PCB then go ahead or ask help to any friend that knows electronics stuff repair.
Let me know further query.
Thanks.

Good Day, pieps57;

Corrective Action: Remove the MVUP13 Hyper Module from the TV chassis, remove the top shield and replace the 10uf, 16v capacitors using Part Number 24619040. It’s recommended that all of the capacitors identified be replaced (Note: These capacitors are low impedance surface mounted aluminum electrolytic capacitors. Care should be taken to avoid damaging the PCB while replacing these capacitors.) CAPS: cx178, cx221, cx230, cx241, cx250, cx261, cx270, cx541, cx670 & c514, c5030.

Hi
The most likely problem is the auto focus module.
A costly repair.
If you are going to fix it ask for a rebuilt one.

Flickering on black screen or dark areas of a screen

The moving might have created a loose conection, the sets age tell me there are possible other overheated areas that need to be resoldered to prevent other symptoms,If you are familiar with tv service you can check the conections in the output transformer area,he is responsible for generating the high voltage that lights up the 3 picture tubes, before the Hight volatege gets to the pix tubes there is a High volage distribution box that separetes the voltage for each tube, check it and make sure is not degraded, you need to be very careful when dealing with these parts, there is a lot of volatge in that areas,If you are not familiar with tv service be safe and call for assistance froma servicer.
