There's a fix:

Your Zune will need a "hard reset."

To do this, use a small screwdriver to pop off the plastic shielding where the Zune cable plugs into and remove the two screws on either side of the plug. Next pop the cover off and locate the battery plug at the top left corner of the Zune, using your screw driver, pop the cable connection half way off, and do this to the other plug on the right side. Wait 3 seconds, then push down the right connector and then the left battery connector. Your Zune should start up immediately. Press the backing of the Zune down (make sure headphone jack is aligned) and put the screws and cover back in place.

It's an easy process but if you're unsure don't attempt it.

I just checked the official Microsoft Zune web site. This problem has to do with 2008 being a leap year. The official solution is to unplug the Zune and allow the battery to drain. The screen will go black. Wait until 7:00AM Eastern time (6:00AM Central, 5:00AM Mountain, 4:00AM Pacific) before plugging back in.

Allow the battery to recharge and you should be good. They advise against taking apart the Zune.

There is a thread at the Zune Boards that says to allow your battery to drain then plug into a wall charger if you have one. Don't plug back in to a PC until after the times mentioned above. I have done this and it does work.

Mine did same thing. Take apart and unplug battery is the only thing that would fix mine.

Zune frozen with logo

Let the battery drain completely and then plug into computer. There was a leap year glitch from Microsoft and the fix is working today. Ours froze yesterday and it's OK this morning. This only fixes those that froze Dec. 31st.

My Zune froze from using the wrong charger

Reset Zune: Press and hold the back button while pressing up on the control pad.
Connect Zune to a power source: If the Zune device is in sleep mode, this action will wake the Zune device and turn it on. If the battery does not have a charge, you may have to wait several minutes for the Zune device to turn on.

Also, make sure that the hold button on top of your zune is turned to the off position.

Hope this helps!

How to unfreeze my zune???

Microsoft is aware of the problem. Everyone has the same problem. It is a bug in Zune firmware. One option that works is to disconnect the internal battery and that will reset the system. Here is a link to the problem
