Have to hold button down to close door in cold weather

I have the Chamberlain HBW0777 made 9/94 and as soon as the weather gets a little cold the garage door doesn’t want to close. It acts as if there is something blocking the sensors. I have to hold the button in until the door is down. My suspicion is that the sensor that keeps the door from closing on an object is bad and does not like the cold.
I’m pretty savvy with electronics, Is this something that can be repaired or Not worth it?

Thanks for the response. I have checked that and they are in working condition and aligned. I think it has to do with the sensor that if the door hits something, it goes back up, so it wont crush whatever was in the way. In the summer time (Sunny or dark) it works without a hitch, but when it gets a little cold out, It will go part of the way down and in the winter, you can forget it! It starts to move and returns immediately. You have to hold the button in the garage or the button on the keypad out side until the door hits the floor. And once in a while it still tries to return I guess until it realizes that I ain't giving up!

this is the second winter that my garage door doesn't go down. It starts the desent and then goes back. Sometimes when I hold the bottom down in the garage or the remote, it will complete the desent. Why does cold weather contribute to this problem?

I have the same problem. The door doesn't go down most of the time in the winter unless I hold down the remote or inside button.

I have the very same problem - but the lights on the sensors both seem to be on - so I actually disconnected the sensors and gave it a shot. It still doesn't work in the cold weather with the sensors disconnected and the door jerks like crazy and reverses - and the light still flashes.

You have a photo eye (sensor) issue as you suspected. Be sure both green lights are on.  If one is flashing or is off, the photo eyes need to be realigned or there may be a wire shorting out (check for staples in the wire) to the photo eyes.  Sunlight can also be an issue.  The photo eyes might have to be moved away from the opening to be out of the sunlight.

The away that Chamberlain is designed holding either the wall
button or the keypad will only override the photo eyes. If you run the
door and watch the photo eyes closely I believe you will notice one of
them flicker (this might take three people).

On down door reverses in cold weather

A garage door guy says that in colder weather the weather stripping can become stiffer, less pliable, causing more drag or friction on the door. You may need to increase the down pressure a bit. If it's set in the normal range, try increasing it a little bit at a time, but don't max it out.

If the main light flashes 10 times when you try to close the door it is a sensor problem. Make sure they are not flickering ever so slightly and that they are not loose on their brackets. Tweak them a little bit.

During the Winter: I have a garage door that will not close unless I stand inside and hold the button. The door closes but then reveres as if something is underneath it. this happens only in cold weather....

I'd guess that the lights that sensse that something is in the way are dirty or not aligned properly and the cold makes it worse. Also make sure to get some WD40 on the door track and wheels and then the chain on the opener if it's a chain type.

Garage door won't close by remote in cold weather

There are ususally two adjustments on garage door openers...
One is for the pressure and the other is for the travel. Assuming that the travel adjustment is properly adjusted...

On a cold day things are a little tighter and it "wants" a little more downwards pressure to complete its cycle. Sorta like me in the morning -- I need a little coffee to get going on a cold morning.

Adjust the down pressure/force just enough to make the unit close properly. Do not over adjust the down pressure or you will find it won't stay closed. Sometimes the manufacturer doesn't make it too clear where this adjustment is, but you should be able to find it if you look around.

I have seen units that were installed for years all of a sudden need a little tweak of this adjustment.

Good luck

Garage door opener will not close in cold weather

The are two knobs on the back of the opener. They are force settings. One is the upforce and the other is downforce. Turn both knobs to "5" and try. This should take care of the problem. They come from the factory at 1 or 2 and when it gets cold it takes a little more force to cloce the door.

Garage door wont close in cold weather

find force adjustment on logic board and turn clockwise A LITTLE to increase down force. Try to stop door. You do not want TOO MUCH FORCE as that is a SAFETY HAZARD.
